Student Spotlight - Arwa Ali Abdallah
|
|
As an exchange student from Egypt, Arwa Ali Abdallah came to the Wright State University just for one semester. She is in her second year of studying English translation.
Why Wright State?
I think that Wright State is the best place for international students. Before coming here, I never expected that I would find this huge diversity of international students studying here. I have been studying at the WSU just for two months, but I have already found many friends from different countries. It is like traveling around the whole world, getting to know more about other cultures, learn new traditions and customs while you are staying on campus!
Wright State feels like a second home for me. It transformed me from a lonely exchange student who has no family or friends in the USA to a person who has a huge international family and who accepts me for who I am!
Scholarship
I came to the WSU as a global undergraduate program finalist, it is a scholarship by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by World Learning on behalf of ECA. Five other students and I were chosen between thousands of candidates in Egypt to study for one semester in the USA.
Student Organizations and Activities
International Friendships and Muslim Student Association are two student organizations that make me feel at home. IFI events were the first activities I attended once I came to the USA. I met a lot of international students there. The MSA became a special place for me because I am an Arabic person. I haven't met any Arabic people before getting into this organization and it was hard for me because I was feeling lonely. After that, I met many students there who became my close friends and my second family.
Recommendations
Always be supportive and open-minded. We are all coming from different cultures, backgrounds, and different life experiences. Each of us has its own story and challenges like culture shock, so always try to engage with people coming from other cultures, support them, and never make them feel lonely.

International Students Find Their Voice in Leadership and Advocation
Wright State welcomed 550 new international students for the fall 2021 semester from 50 different countries, compared to 39 countries in fall of 2020.
In addition to the struggles international students face before landing on U.S. soil, they also have to fight to make their voices heard amidst fears of being left out.
