Program
Sonata in D Minor for Clarinet and Piano (2016) is written by contemporary composer Michele Mangani (b. 1966). A clarinetist himself, Mangani has written extensively for the clarinet, bringing out the instrument's lyricism, virtuosity and rich palette of tonal colors. This is Orion's first performance of this work.

Trio in D Minor for Violin, Cello and Piano, Opus 32 by Anton Arensky (1861-1906), an Orion favorite, is an ultra-Romantic piece that exudes melody, pathos, brilliant technique and beautiful sound combinations. The final movement pulls ideas from the lyrical first movement, the playful second and the
elegiac third.

High school orchestra director praises impact
of Orion's remote partnership during pandemic
Orion musicians are continuing to work with students at Buffalo Grove, Geneva and Glenbard East high schools remotely, through master classes and coachings. Tim Fawkes, orchestra director at Glenbard East High School, praised Orion for adapting its work to remote learning.

"We are most pleased that, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, our collaboration with Orion continues to flourish," says Fawkes. "The musicians visit us virtually over Zoom, and all parties make the best of the realities of virtual collaboration. Our students still get expert feedback and top-notch modeling from the Orion musicians. During a time when young people are starved for authentic, enriching, eye-opening experiences, the Orion partnership has become even more meaningful to our students."

The sessions are held through Janet’s Stage, Orion's one-of-a-kind partnership with high school orchestra programs, in its eighth year.

"One of Chicago's most vibrant, versatile and distinctive ensembles."
