Officer's Column
Well, it's been a year since the pandemic came charging into our lives. Who would have thought that our lives would have been interrupted for so many months?

As I pause and look back through the year, I see many things that are delightful to me -- my grandchildren continuing to grow, to be full of laughter and willing to try different ways of doing things. As life has slowed down a little, I have had unexpected time with my husband. I have had to look at things from different perspectives. There have also been many tears shed by myself and others over things that we have missed or lost.

In cleaning out and picking up my "drop spots" around the house I came across a list of favorite scriptures.

I just love the verse - Zephaniah 3:17 - "The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing."

This verse provides so many reminders of how much God loves me and you as well --

He is with us no matter what.
He saves us - in many different ways.
He delights in us -- We bring Him joy.
He calms our souls -- We have needed that a lot this year.
He rejoices over each of us -- I picture Him dancing and singing to each of us.

I feel protected, enabled to face life and its trials, and I feel comforted and loved. All of this makes me stronger in Him and in my walk.

Pray with me -
Jesus, surround us with your compassion and love. Help us feel your presence in our lives. Guide us toward you.
Amen

Worship Watch Party
Sunday, February 21, at 10 am
We will begin small virtual worship watch parties in the CLC beginning February 21. Our worship leaders will be leading worship from the sanctuary, and we'll stream it down to the CLC.  There is a 50-person limit, so registration is required.  Each week, an invitation will be sent to three branches.  After those branches have a chance to sign up, if there are still spots available, it will be opened up for everyone else.  We hope this will give everyone a chance to participate.  We will bring our own chairs and stay with our families.  We are excited about the opportunity to SEE one another and worship together in person.  The virtual service will not change, so if you are not ready to come in person, no worries!  Continue to log in as you have been for your virtual worship experience.

If you'd like to attend on Sunday, February 21, click here to check availability and make a reservation!
Ash Wednesday Worship
February 17 at 7 pm
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.  During this liturgical season, we are reminded of our humanness, our sin, and the knowledge that we are called to shed off our old lives so that we might live into new life with Christ.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the journey toward Easter.  In this time, we're invited to change directions from self-serving toward the self-giving way of the cross.
Our service this year will be streamed, and there will be creative ways for you to participate.  The "imposition of ashes" is a central part of the service. Typically, we are invited to come forward to receive the ashes on our forehead or hand. In Scripture, ashes serve both as a symbol of mortality and as a sign of mourning and repentance. But this year, find a black crayon, a magic marker (water based), or ashes from your fireplace or grill. We will then put the sign of the cross on our foreheads or hands, together.
Come and worship with us! Click here to print a bulletin at home!
Lenten Bible Study
Wednesdays, beginning February 24, at 7 pm
This year's Lenten Bible Study will begin on February 24 and will run for five weeks. It will explore the intricacies of the Book of Ruth.  It is more than meets the casual eye!

Pre-homework:
  • Read the Book of Ruth. It is only 4 chapters long.
  • Read through the book one more time, but this time, underline particular words that keep popping up.
  • Look beyond the romance and ask yourself... "Why is this Book included in the Old Testament?"  And, ask yourself, "So what?"

The study will begin at 7:00 each Wednesday, February 24 - March 24, on the church's Facebook page and is led by Pastor Rebekah Maul.
Preschool News
Registration for the 2021-2022 school year is going well, and we continue to enroll children while we have space available.

Thank you for your prayers and referrals, and please continue to spread the word that the preschool has openings for children two years of age through transitional kindergarten!

Contact Dawn Brown at [email protected] for more information.
Housing and Race: Zoom Discussion
February 23, 7:00-8:00, and March 4
Wake Forest Presbyterian is a mission partner with Habitat for Humanity, and since we can't volunteer to build due to the pandemic, Habitat has encouraged every coalition member to learn. To that end there are two special opportunities to talk about the intersections of housing and race. Much work is still to be done on equality and access for secure housing and the passing on of wealth to the next generation. Join us on February 23, 7:00 - 8:00 pm when we'll discuss the role housing policy has played in our nation's racial disparities and the role it must play in solving them, the history of race and housing, and five policy solutions to advance racial equity in housing.  Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87409943295?pwd=Ym9JRVo0b3RhNWduOEV3Q2k3REp1Zz09

On March 4 we'll zoom with the whole Wake County Habitat coalition where we'll discuss housing and race in breakout rooms as well as watch the documentary "Segregated By Design" (trailer is here: https://vimeo.com/326638704).

Please RSVP to John Fawcett by February 14. We need five participants minimum to hold the gathering for fruitful conversation! [email protected]
Dementia Caregiver Class
February 17 and March 17 at 10 am
We are very excited to have Dr. Andrea Bozoki, new Director of the UNC Memory Disorders Clinic, join us for both our February and March caregiver classes!  The classes will be an "Ask the Doctor" format with Dr. Bozoki answering some of the questions that are asked by caregivers. The February 17 class will focus on Alzheimer's Disease and vascular dementia. The March 17 class will focus on Lewy Body Dementia. Both classes will be held virtually from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. We encourage dementia caregivers to attend both sessions because it is very common for individuals to have more than one type of dementia.  And you always learn something new when you are exposed to any information regarding dementia care regardless of your loved one's specific diagnosis.

To get the link for the Zoom meeting on February 17, please call or email Pat Snyder if you are not already receiving emails about our classes. Her cell phone is 828-429-7905, and her email address is [email protected]. You can reach Lynette Wilson at 252-671-6523 or at [email protected]. Feel free to share this information with anyone whom you think might benefit from support in their caregiving journey.

VA Ministry Update
Our WFPC Veteran's Assistance Ministry is a ministry that supplies requested shelf -stable food items to the Durham VA on a monthly basis. It is one of several missions that we organize with a focus on food insecurity.  Our Veteran's Assistance team is now being led by Bonnie and Benny Hoots, along with energetic support from Dana Wills, Melanie Floyd, Millie Seiler, and Audrey and Bruce Kemp.  The team is looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend in hopes of resuming our annual food drive at Lowes Foods.  Planning is underway, so please stay tuned for more information as the time gets closer.
Please note that due to COVID-19 safety procedures of the Durham VA, our annual Valentine's Day carnation delivery to patients is canceled. We hope to resume this outreach of the ministry next year with support from our congregation. Meanwhile, please keep our veterans in your thoughts and prayers.

February Blood Drive is Rescheduled
The February Blood Drive at WFPC has been rescheduled to March 21 due to the surge in COVID cases. If you signed up for an appointment at the last drive you will be contacted via email with rescheduling information. Please contact Amanda McCabe with questions ([email protected]).

Tri Area Ministry (TAM)
Donations to TAM are down in January, and as a result they are in need of feminine hygiene products, canned beans, canned meat and fruit, baby wipes and size 6 children diapers. Donations can be dropped off at 149 E. Holding Ave. downtown Wake Forest every Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and the second and third Saturdays of each month (same times). In addition, there is a convenient 24/7 drop-off box out front if you can't drop off donations during the open business hours. Did you know that you can download a full list of all requested food and personal care items on the Tri Area Ministry website at https://triareaministry.com/donate/? They even provide a link to their Amazon wishlist to make shopping even easier! Check it out.

Backpack Buddies
We have exciting news from our WFPC Backpack Buddies program to share! On March 1 the team will return to delivering the weekend bags of food to our three local schools: Wakefield Elementary, Wakefield Middle, and North Forest Pines Elementary.  This is a step in returning back to pre-COVID operations for the team. Please contact Heather Wheeler at [email protected] if you are interested in helping with bag deliveries to one or more schools.
Also, on Saturday, March 6, the team will return to the WFPC campus for their meal packing event. Since the onset of COVID restrictions, the team has been working offsite. To help with this packing event you must sign up to participate, and each volunteer will be assigned a specific time to volunteer. Please contact Heather Wheeler if you are interested in participating.
As always, if  you would like to donate food items, please contact Ed Tharrington at [email protected]. Thank you for your support!

If you would like any information on how you can get involved or what is happening with a specific ministry, please feel free to contact your Mission and Outreach elders with questions. Contact Randy at [email protected]  and Sabrina at [email protected]
