“Cultivating Kindness, Relationships, and Growth for all.”
News You Can Use: November 5, 2021

Dear CCGS Families,
We had another excellent week of learning. This week Mrs. Anderson and I spent a lot of time in one of our early childhood rooms and it was amazing to watch our youngest learners in school as they have adjusted to the routines and transitions throughout their day. This week, I also got to visit Mrs. Babula's classroom and spent some time watching her students wo have grown immensely on their independence and letter sounds. Watching students learn to read and develop as readers, brings me so much joy! I also had a great time with Mrs. Pynenberg's class at recess. They were so proud of earning their Golden Platter Award. This month is Native American Heritage Month. This month is a time for us to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Native Americans. Although we focus on being thankful every day, November is typically a month to promote thankfulness and kindness. We will continue to reflect on what we are thankful for each day and are exploring additional ways to show kindness.

  • As a reminder next week our Early Childhood and Kindergarten students do not have school on Thursday, November 11th or November 12th. Our 1st-3rd grade students will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m. on November 11th and do not have school on November 12th to allow for conferences.

Each week I offer a way for you to share a celebration or ask questions on this survey. If you would like a specific reply, please add your name so I can get back to you. If you comment about a specific teacher- I sent this directly to them! These comments have really made their day. This week the following celebrations were provided:

"My student enjoyed the spirit days this week. I was also impressed at how you handled the active shooter drill, especially for the little ones."
"My child’s teacher quick response."
"The practice my son and I have been doing at home to help in math."
"The spirit of the school staff is just amazing! My child is loving school and I owe it to all of your staff for giving it your all 100% of the time. Best experience ever."

For some questions- I forward on to staff to reflect on or create a resource for families, and for others, I will post a reply here. A parent asked what we are doing for math fluency, so i wanted to share this.

In Early Childhood and Kindergarten: Our students are learning how to count and identify numbers fluently. They are also learning how to subitize which is to identify the number of things in a set simply by quickly looking at them—not by counting them one by one.

In first and second grade your student uses Moby Max which is a fluency program that moves through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The log ins will be shared with you at conferences next week so you can also track your child's progress.

In third grade our students are using Xtra Math. This will also be shared at conferences with you. Students are also working through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each year the time to complete the problem decreases to build fluency.

There is still time to fit you in if you know someone. Please email Mrs. Anderson at [email protected]
  • Special Third Grade Author Visit: We are so excited to announce our first author visit of the year for our "big kids" in the elementary schools! Author Lauren Tarshis, created of the beloved I Survived! series, will be visiting our third grade through sixth grade students via Zoom on Friday, December 10th! We kicked off this exciting news with lots of fun historical clues from our librarians, and we will continue to celebrate Lauren's books with creative research projects & activities until our virtual event! If you'd like to join in on the fun, you can order an autographed copy of Lauren's books or even enter our bookmark competition! All book orders are due by November 10th, and the contest ends on December 7th. Please see the flyers below for more information. Thank you for teaming up with us to promote the love of books in your home!  Your elementary librarians- Please click here to access the information to order a book and enter the contest.
  • Masks and Coats: Please send an extra mask with your child each day. They often break or get dirty or wet. Students will continue to go outside for PE and recess even on snowy days. Please send gloves, hats and coats. If you need help getting your child winter items, please contact [email protected]. We have resources for you!
  • Holiday Giving Tree: If your family is in need of help for gifts for your children, please email our social worker at [email protected] We have a very generous community and we will do our best to help all of our families in need in some way. We will be sharing the giving tree sign up for donations in late November early December.
  • Car Rider and Walker Reminders: Please have your red or green name showing for pick up time. K-3 parents, please make a right turn only into the rear lot at the end of the day. All walkers must have the red sign to pick up students. If you don't have your red sign, students will not be released out the walker door and you will need to bring your ID to the office to pick up your student. I sent an email to all walker families with the explanation for this change.
  • Volunteers- We are looking for volunteers for at home and at school. If interested please email [email protected] with your availability and we will be in touch! Thank you to those that have responded!
  • Lunch: Students have 3 lunch choices every day. The menu is sent home with every student and is also on the Y115 app. You can also click here to find that!

Have a great weekend!

Congratulations to Mrs. Campbell's class for being our Golden Platter Winner of the week! They get to keep the Golden Platter Trophy in their classroom this next week and they will have a recess with Mrs. Anderson or I.
Mrs. Prentice Highlight of the Week
We had an amazing first quarter in third-grade. We worked so hard all quarter on reaching our AR goal as a class. We set a goal to read 80 books and we SOARED past our goal and read 114 books! I am so proud of all the hard work. We added the books to our book wall as we finished them. Students have also been working hard on planning their own morning meeting to present to the class. They chose from topics such as kindness, friendship, growth mindset, and many others to create a presentation to share with their peers. In just one quarter, I have seen so much growth and progress in our classroom and I can't wait to see what else we will accomplish together!
How to Understand Your Child's MAP Score
On Wednesday, November 10th, our K-3 students will be bringing home their Fall MAP report. This article explains more about what the MAP assessment measures and how we use it in school to help your student grow.
