Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Our world is becoming more digital every day, from leisure social media activity to remote working hours and even telehealth doctor visits. Technology has also become an important part of our currency, with cryptocurrency rising in popularity around the globe.

Just as we ensure the safety of Queens residents against criminal dealings on the ground, my Office stands at the ready to hold accountable those who seek to illegally profit from the digital industry. This week, I announced grand larceny charges against a Queens website consultant for allegedly stealing the proceeds of an online sale of more than 3,000 non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The defendant set up an online sale of digital artwork for his two clients and then allegedly diverted nearly $233,000 in SOL cryptocurrency to his personal digital wallets.

My Office created the Cyber Crime Unit to handle such unique cases involving cryptocurrency, NFTs and transactions that are added to blockchains. Experienced prosecutors use all the digital and traditional tools at their disposal in order to delve into the virtual world we live in today and ensure justice for all victims of crime.

In addition to allegations of cryptocurrency theft, the Cyber Crime Unit also handles complaints regarding cyber scams, inappropriate digital content, predatory behavior towards minors, and identity theft.

If you believe that you have been a victim of a cyber crime, you may reach out to my Office by calling 718.286.6673 or emailing MajorEcoCrimes@queensda.org. We're here to help.

Rescued Animals
I was relieved to recently learn that one of the dogs rescued from dog fighting conditions in Richmond Hill is now thriving with a loving family.

The puppy pictured below, Benson, was one of 27 dogs rescued during the summer thanks to the invaluable efforts by the ASPCA and the NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad. My Office brought 92-counts of criminal charges against the defendant in this case, including charges of aggravated animal cruelty, prohibition of animal fighting and other crimes.

Those who seek to harm our most vulnerable community members will be held accountable in Queens County. If you suspect animal abuse, call 311 or 911. You may also contact our Animal Cruelty Helpline at 718-286-6622.
New Coats Giveaway
The winter weather is officially here and, just as we do every year, my Office took the opportunity to co-sponsor coat giveaway events for Queens residents in Elmhurst and Far Rockaway.

In partnership with Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities Center, Sheltering Arms, Agape Ministries, New York Cares, and other community leaders, we gave away hundreds of new coats to families in need.
Office Toy Drive
Following an Office-wide toy drive, our Community Partnerships Division collected thousands of toys generously donated by members of our staff, including dolls, balls, games, books, stuffed animals and so much more.

The gifts were delivered to Hour Children, Inc. in Long Island City, a family shelter in Briarwood, and other select locations in hopes of bringing holiday cheer to children around the Borough. I thank my staff for their generosity this holiday season.
Holiday Celebrations at Baisley Park
Our communities have been through so much, they deserve festive holiday celebrations for themselves and their loved ones. It was wonderful to join the Baisley Park Tenants Association, LIFE Camp, Inc, Agape Ministries and Rev. Dr. Maria Hubbard, IROCK Charities, and many others for an event filled with games, prizes, toys for kids, gifts for seniors, and a coat giveaway.

I especially extend my gratitude to Council Member Adrienne Adams for hosting this celebration for the community.
Vaccine Pop-Up At Queens Borough Hall
To beat back this latest wave of COVID infections, we must all continue to ensure safety for ourselves and loved ones.

During the next few weeks, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards is hosting a pop-up vaccination clinic at Borough Hall, in partnership with Governor Kathy Hochul and the State Department of Health. No appointments required!

Christmas Greetings
This holiday season continues to present many challenges for Queens communities but I am confident that we will overcome the obstacles placed in our way.

To everyone celebrating across our Borough and our City this weekend, I wish you a very Merry Christmas. May your festivities be filled with warmth, joy, and most importantly, good health.
Kwanzaa Greetings
This Sunday marks the beginning of Kwanzaa, a seven-day celebration of African culture. To everyone celebrating, I wish you festivities filled with laughter, harmony and safety. May the light of this happy occasion bring togetherness and prosperity to your homes!
