“A guy with a flag simulates a flame, and a nozzleman says…I am squirting you with water…and then they say…fire is out.”
This statement by a Navy sailor is found in the recently released Navy report on the USS Bonhomme Richard fire and typifies how many of the firefighting drills were conducted for the crew before the catastrophic fire, lasting five days, destroyed the ship in July 2020.
In addition to poorly run and deficient drills, many of the ship’s crew had not donned Self- Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in over a year, did not know how to use or activate Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) or halogenated hydrocarbon (Halon) firefighting systems, and were unaware of where to locate and use Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBA).

A chemical used for fire suppression leaked from the basement of a high-rise building under construction in Seoul, left two workers dead and nine others injured, firefighters said.
The workers were reportedly insulating boilers and firefighting facilities when a facility that stores some fire extinguishing agents containing carbon dioxide was damaged, leading to the chemical leak.

International Fire Protection
Safespill, a leader in environmentally safe fire protection systems, has announced that the company’s core technology – the Safespill flooring system, also known as an ignitable liquid drainage floor assembly – will be added to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 409, the industry’s Standard on Aircraft Hangars, 2022 Edition as an equivalent to traditional foam-based systems in hangars.
For the first time in more than 30 years, military and airport operators now have a new, environmentally friendly option for hangars at risk of liquid fuel fires. Until now, the industry has relied on two fire suppression systems – aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) and high expansion foam (HEF).

Samcheok to Construct ESS Fire Safety Center (Korea)

Aju Business Daily
SEOUL -- Through a 69.8 billion won ($59.6 million) project, the ground was broken to build a fire safety verification center in the eastern port city of Samcheok. The fire safety technology center will research and develop efficient extinguishing systems for fires lit by large-capacity secondary batteries, also known as rechargeable batteries, used in energy storage systems.
An energy storage system (ESS) is an integrated system of secondary battery packs. It is normally connected to a renewable energy source such as a solar power plant or a wind farm to collect electricity and provide power to nearby towns' power grids or sell electricity back to power companies. South Korea has some 2,300 energy storage system (ESS) facilities operated by private and state power companies as of July 2020 and about 30 of them have been damaged by fire and left inoperable.

More enforcement at borders could deter illicit trade
Smugglers are finding a profitable market in synthetic refrigerants that are highly potent greenhouse gases.
By land and sea, they are shipping marked, unmarked, and mis-marked containers of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Authorities in the European Union, which began a phaseout of HFCs in 2015, seized hundreds of metric tons of illicit HFCs in 2019 and 2020, according to figures from the European Chemical Industry Council . This illicit trade spans the globe, according to the United Nations Environment Program.

Royal Aeronautical Society
Following the crises of two fatal crashes of the 737 MAX airliners, the prolonged grounding of the aircraft and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the former assumptions of ‘business returning to normal’ are no longer valid. Boeing has responded to this with the creation of a new Global Enterprise Sustainability division that is aiming to strengthen the values of environmental, social and governance (ESG) and put them at the company’s core. Appointed in September 2020, Chris Raymond is the company’s first Chief Sustainability Officer and the creation of this new division and position (which reports directly to the CEO) is a sign of how much importance the company now places on this key area – with the company releasing its first comprehensive sustainability report earlier this year.

CleanTechnica
Tragedy struck again at Gruber Motors in Arizona. An electrical failure started a fire in their main service building, and managed to ignite a car’s lithium batteries before the fire department could arrive and put the blaze out, making it very difficult to save anything in the building. Sadly, there were at least 25 original Tesla Roadsters in the building, and they were totally destroyed.
“Each of the owners affected by our fire last night have been contacted. I personally reached out to each of you affected by a lost Roadster, rather than have you find out through the media,” the company said in a statement posted to social media.

By Dave Pelton & John Mackey
Mackey Group
Congratulations! You’ve beaten the odds and built a thriving and sustainable fire & life safety business. You planned well, invested plenty of sweat equity along with countless hours and your unique talents. When you started, you may or may not have been aware of your odds. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates approximately 20 percent of small businesses fail within the first year. Half will fail by the end of the fifth year. And by the end of a decade, only 30 percent of businesses will have remained - a 70 percent failure rate. Having built and led your successful business over the decades, you now find yourself at a transition point. What do I do next? Do I transition the business to my family? Do I sell a portion to other investors? Do I prepare the business for sale? Where do you begin to start planning your next chapter?
