Our Featured Employee:
Ruth Brittain
We chose Ruth Brittain for the Cahoon Care "Employee of the Quarter" because of the amazing job she does for our clients, consistently going above and beyond. She is a hardworking lady who never says no and jumps at the opportunity to help us out whenever needed. We can call her on a moment's notice and she quickly quips with a smile, "Where am I headed to next?"

Ruth works 60 to 80+ hours on many given weeks. She works with many of our clients and even puts in a full 48 hours with one of them weekly. She is a true Rock Star!

Ruth started her career in Home Care after raising seven children. She decided to spread her wings and started with obtaining her DSP, PSS, and CRMA and then working in many area facilities for a few years. It was then that she saw an advertisement for Cahoon Care Associates. This kind of role seemed like more of a natural fit for her, doing one-on-one work with clients and really getting to know them and their needs.

Ruth started with Cahoon Care in July 2019. She enjoys working at Cahoon Care as she feels she is part of a team and that her voice is heard as that team member. That means a lot to her. She also enjoys working with her co-workers.

One of her clients recently shared that Ruth is a huge asset to our company, commenting that "Ruth knows exactly what my needs are before I even do." That is a true talent in itself.

Thank you for all you do, Ruth!

Tips for Caring for Someone with Parkinson's Disease
April was Parkinson's Awareness Month. While most people have a general idea about the physical symptoms of Parkinson's, not as many understand what the day-to-day challenges of those who suffer from it can look like.

It's very helpful for those who have a loved one or are caring for someone with Parkinson's to become knowledgeable about what to expect as the disease progresses.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominantly dopamine-producing neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. While genetic markers and environmental triggers can be contributing risk factors, the root cause is unknown. The end result, however, is that dopaminergic neurons gradually break down or die. As dopamine levels decrease, abnormal brain activity takes place, leading to impaired movement. People usually develop the disease around age 60 or older.

Learn more about other symptoms and about how to help simplify the lifestyle of those suffering from PD on our blog.
Video Corner:
Why are People with Dementia at Higher Risk for COVID-19?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many caregivers noticed that those suffering from dementia were at a higher risk of contracting the disease.

One reason they're more vulnerable is because they're less apt to take common sense, reasonable steps that are necessary to protect themselves after possible exposure, or to prevent themselves from even being exposed in the first place.

They may not remember to wash their hands. They may not remember to cover their coughs. They may not properly judge keeping six feet away from others.

Learn more about the connection between dementia and COVID-19 in this video.

Friendly Reminders about Best Work Practices
After-Hour Contact - If you need to get in touch with us for any reason after hours (evenings or weekends), be sure to call the main office line in Norwell or Maine rather than sending a text. For example, if you get a flat tire on your way to work and want to let us know that you'll be late, call - don't text!

Mask Policy - If a client asks you to remove your mask, please refer them to the office. We will support you by explaining our policy to the client or family member. Our policy is that under no condition should you remove your mask, even if the client asks you to do so because they can't hear you. You are not a guest in their home; you are there to work. Click here to download a helpful pro-mask flyer that can be distributed in client homes.

Cell Phones - Caregivers should not give their cell phone numbers out to clients or family members. All scheduling should go through the office. Do not call your client or their family from the store to ask if they need anything.
