The Skokie School Home Scoop

Dear Skokie Community,

I hope you were able to get outside and experience the beautiful weather this weekend. I enjoyed watching my little guys shoot hoops, splash in puddles, and chase each other around gleefully.

This weekend felt like a little glimpse into some semblance of normalcy. As was discussed at this past week's board meeting, we are hoping to welcome our Skokie students back to a full school day on April 19th. We are in the midst of moving furniture, determining room assignments, and brainstorming ways in which we can continue to support student connections as we approach the AM and PM merge. This is an exciting time.

While many of our students continue to do well, there are also students who are struggling from the circumstances brought on by the pandemic. Sometimes the struggle is in the form of anxiety, sometimes it is lack of motivation, sometimes it is anger. Some students struggle to complete remote work or attend Zoom classes. Please know that we understand that some of our students are having a hard time, and we seek to partner with families to support them. If your child is struggling, please communicate with your child's teacher if you have not already done so. I shared some resources focused on supporting families during COVID-19 several weeks ago from Child Mind Institute, and am including a link again in case you are looking for help.

We look forward to many more sunny spring days in the weeks ahead!

Take care,

Betty Weir          Louis Kotvis

Travel Guidance and Spring Break
In mid-February, a message was shared noting that Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has issued
updated travel guidance for anyone traveling to and from suburban Cook County from designated states with a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19. The District's original message has been updated with further information regarding International Travel. Please keep in mind that this guidance from CCDPH may change at any time. This plan subject to change as health guidance is amended.

YouTube Filtering & Functionality

Video is growing and YouTube is now one of the largest search engines in the world. Filtering videos does not work the same way as traditional internet content filtering; therefore, the District continues to research and implement strategies to protect our community. Beginning February 24, we will be adding additional measures to filter YouTube for our young learners in grades K-4. Please note this may cause some functionality issues.  If this happens, please be sure to reach out to our technology staff via this email address:[email protected].  We recommend talking to your child about safe YouTube searching on home devices as well as school issued technology. Common Sense Media provides a helpful video on  ways to make YouTube safer.
Please keep an eye out for future parent learning opportunities on this topic and others from our technology staff.
