American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2
2023 - June Edition

President's Message
I hope you are all looking forward to the arrival of summer as much as I am (especially after such a cold winter and spring—by So-Cal standards at least). I would like to highlight two important events that took place this past month. On May 8 – 9, chapter leaders, advocacy faculty, and pediatric residents travelled to Sacramento for the AAP California 2023 Advocacy Day, which was co-sponsored by our chapter.
|
|
The conference featured a remarkable line-up of speakers, including two physicians who are members of the state assembly—Drs. Jasmeet Bains and Akilah Weber—as well as Dr. Mark Ghaly, a pediatrician and Secretary of California Health and Human Services. It was inspiring to hear about their paths from clinical medicine to state government, and to learn about the initiatives they are championing to benefit child and family health in our state.
Pediatricians from across the state were able to participate in advocacy training and meet with their legislators to discuss child health policy issues such as Medi-Cal reimbursement, screening for social determinants of health, and protections around social media use, all of which likely impact your patients and pediatric practices. I would like to thank the leadership of AAP California for organizing this event. I would also like to thank our state government affairs representatives, Drs. Marti Baum and Susan Wu, and our legislative analyst, Dr. Kamaal Jones, for their contributions.
If you are interested in state-level advocacy and would like to attend this conference, please look out for e-mail invitations early next year. We would love to have more chapter members participate!
The second event was our annual Chapter Symposium, held on May 20 at UCLA. This was our second year hosting the event in-person after the COVID-19 pandemic. It was fantastic getting to meet chapter members in person, to hear talks from our outstanding speakers, and to tour the posters presented by our trainees. Please see Dr. Niru Madduri’s article below for more details about the symposium. I would like to thank our Executive Director, Dr. Tomas Torices, for putting on yet another successful conference for our chapter.
I would also like to thank Dr. Christine Thang for her service as founding chair of our newsletter’s Editorial Committee, and to welcome Dr. Madduri who will be assuming the role. The newsletter has expanded considerably under Dr. Thang’s leadership, and I have enjoyed reading recurring features such as the Member Spotlight that have helped us get to know our colleagues better.
I would also like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Upcoming events in this month’s newsletter include:
- June 23 | Integrating Behavioral Health into Practice to Promote Health Equity Conference (CHLA)
- July 11 | LAC DPH Pediatric Information Session: "Health Access and Equity in a School Setting” (Noon webinar)
I hope you have a wonderful month!
Best wishes,
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

The Quorum
Bill Updates
By Kamaal A. Jones, MD, FAAP
Policy and Legislative Affairs Analyst
The legislative session continues to press forward. June 2nd marked the final day for any bills to make it out of their house of origin. That is to say, bills that were written in the State Assembly, had to pass out of the Assembly, and bills that were written in the State Senate, had to pass out of the Senate by this deadline. Any bills that did not pass out of their house of origin, and progress to the other house (Assembly to Senate, or Senate to Assembly), now generally fall into one of two categories... June Tweetiatrician Update
Pride Month
AAP is proud to celebrate LGBTQ+ children, families, pediatricians, and staff! You can download the new "We Care for ALL Children & Families" poster here. The poster can be displayed in an exam room, waiting room, or front window to show that your practice supports LGBTQ+ children and families.
During June, AAP is planning on featuring short videos from pediatricians answering questions about Pride Month.
Are you interested in recording a short video that could be published on AAP’s Instagram? If so, reply to this email. The videos would answer questions like “What does Pride mean to you as a healthcare provider?”, “What should the parents of LGBTQ+ children know?”, and “How can medical professionals be better allies?”.
