Dear Colleagues,
Now that we are fully into the academic year, there are a couple of wonderful opportunities to celebrate teachers and educators this month. On Thursday, September 21, we will be honoring the Teachers of the Year from throughout the county at the 51st-Annual Contra Costa County Teachers of the Year celebration at Lesher Center where we will also be announcing the two county winners.
The San Francisco Giants are hosting an Educator Appreciation Night on Friday, September 29, honoring all teachers, administrators and faculty. It is sure to be a fun evening with colleagues from around the Bay Area.
Thanks to funding from the Lesher Foundation and in collaboration with the Center for Community Arts, our agency developed four elementary-level model visual art lessons that are based on the California Arts Education Framework. The modules are available to all at no cost and will use materials commonly found in classrooms. There is more information and links below, but you can also visit the CCCOE VAPA Webpage.
Before I end, I must acknowledge Hispanic Heritage Month, as well as California Native American Day. Let’s continue to emphasize the important role education has in promoting cultural understanding and honoring the heritage of all students and those within our communities. Library Sign-up Month is also this month. The Contra Costa County Library has many events planned to bring the community into your local library and encourage reading.
Thank you for all the work you do with your students. I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities in this newsletter and feel free to share it with your colleagues.
With gratitude,
Lynn Mackey
Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools
