The Impact of 2023 Summer Missionaries

CLICK HERE to hear a heart-felt testimony from one of our summer missionaries

Summers at Mission Centers of Houston are always busy and exciting! Our theme for this Summer was “I Am Here to Serve” based on Matthew 20:28 . The ink on the summer t-shirts was barely dry when many changes started happening – 4 of our 11 summer missionary interns (affectionately named “critters”) had to drop out due to health, family, or school situations. We started the summer with the smallest group of critters ever since 1970 when the program started.  This would make the summer challenging, especially since our newest ministry, The Compassion Center, has 10,000 square feet of non-air-conditioned warehouse space that needed a lot of volunteer work.

As always, God had a plan! Through all these uncertainties, with God’s help, the “critters”:

• Provided leadership with our Kids, Youth, Senior Citizens, Homeless, and Bible Studies.

• Led 8 different weekly youth or family mission groups

• Led 47 of our own Middle and High Schoolers from the Joy Center (Magnolia Park Interns) and the Gano Center (Gano Street Mission Crew) to follow Christ’s commandment of “loving your neighbor as yourself “ (Mark 12:31).

• Assembled and passed out 2,000 outreach bags

• Ministered to hundreds of children in public schools through crafting and fellowshipping.

• Led impactful prayer walks down the streets where the hearts of several middle school boys were moved to tears followed by passionate prayers and ministry that addressed the revealed needs.

• Spoke and provided music in various local churches

Our main goal relating to summer missionaries is to develop the next generation of faith leaders. Our entire staff can attest to the level of leadership they all grew into by the end of summer. The area that impressed us the most was their desire to teach the Bible to the kids and the youth. Their lessons were well - prepared and creative with a focus on teaching vital Biblical truths. We know their labor in the Lord and for the Kingdom of God will have eternal benefits.

This year’s summer interns will be missed dearly because of their devotion, hard work, and love for our community. This summer was a testimony to the faithfulness of God, when we thought we were going to be short with just 7 of them in the blistering heat on the streets and in non-air conditioned spaces. The Lord showed us what He can do when we humble ourselves and place our trust in Him. To all the churches, organizations, and individuals who prayed for us, fed us, visited us, hosted us, and encouraged us – a huge “Thank You” goes to each one of you. To God be the glory!!

Ministry Spotlights

MCH Youth Making an Impact

47 youth from the Gano and Joy communities served alongside our staff and summer missionaries for a total of 1,807 hours this summer. They learned the importance of investing in their own communities by being a blessing to kids, senior adults, the homeless and all of us here at MCH!
