FUNDS FOR ALCOVY RIVER BRIDGE RENOVATION PLEDGED OR IN-HAND
Thanks to our many generous supporters (see below), Newton Trails has received donations, grants, and pledges sufficient to renovate and open the Alcovy River Bridge. The final details on two pledges need to be worked out before requests for bids can be sent to contractors. We guess it will take 9-12 months to complete construction after a contractor has been hired. The sooner the better!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - REBECCA MORE AND CHIP WEST, NEWTON TRAILS' NEWEST BOARD MEMBERS
Tell us about your career?
-
Rebecca is a licensed, Better Homes and Gardens Metro Brokers real estate agent and an interior designer. "I love both my jobs."
-
Chip became a meteorologist by accident. When he joined the Air Force he asked to be trained as a weapons specialist, but due to a clerical error he ended up a weather specialist. For 20 years in the Air Force Reserves he served as a meteorologist doing weather reconnaissance, which included leading flight teams into the eyes of hurricanes. In 2004 he started a 19-year second career with the National Weather Service as meteorologist in charge of an Atlanta Center unit attached to the Federal Aviation Administration. He recently retired from that job.

| |
How long have you lived in this area?
-
Rebecca grew up in Conyers, attended Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, graduated in 2018 with a degree in marketing, and then moved to Covington. She has lived in the area all her life.
-
Chip grew up on a family farm in Michigan. During his military career he was stationed on the Mississippi coast. In 2001, he met his future wife, Jonna, and moved to Covington in 2002.
What caused you to volunteer with Newton Trails?
| |
|
-
Rebecca - "I walk the Cricket Frog Trail all the time, often with my dog Birdie. Then I was asked to join the Newton Trails' event planning team to plan the recent fund-raiser. That was fun. I've always enjoyed volunteering and doing community service. I am really glad I found a way to contribute to something I love."
-
Chip - "I do marathons and ironman competitions and I've been running the trails. They are beautiful and it isn't by magic that they stay beautiful. Now that I am retired I just really enjoy getting out there and helping to keep them beautiful."
| |
What's the best part of your volunteer service to Newton Trails?
-
Rebecca - "The fund-raiser was really cool to see and be involved in, I saw so many people that I see when I am walking on the trail." Though new to the board, Rebecca has already made hugely significant contributions to our promotions efforts, the design and content of our presentations, and our social media presence.
-
Chip enjoys working with Newton Trails' trail maintenance volunteers and has become a leader and key member of that group. "They are a bunch of good people, I look forward to that time together, making the trails look good."
Is there anything you would like to say to the Newton Trails' community?
-
Rebecca - "If you are thinking about volunteering, please reach out. If you have an interest in trails or if you have a special talent you would like to contribute, Newton Trails could use your help. Also, keep hitting the trails!"
-
Chip - "What people may not realize is that all Newton County trails are unbelievable. What makes the Cricket Frog Trail exceptional for runners, cyclists, and walkers are two things unique to rail-to-trail trails. One, the trees along the trail are old-growth and provide almost 100% canopy (shade) over the trail. Second, it's essentially flat."
| |
Safety first - Always remember to stop and look both ways before crossing any street or road. Drivers cannot always see you and sometimes do not stop for people in crosswalks.
Benches - The Cricket Frog Trail now features thirteen benches. All generously given by local donors. We now have benches on the east and west sides of Covington, in Mansfield, and out in the County. Two more benches are coming. Although we have as many as are needed between Elm Street and the Covington Bypass, there are still outstanding locations available elsewhere. Interested in donating a bench? Contact info@newtontrails.org.
Trash cans - Thanks to the City of Covington, there are now three trashcans placed along the Cricket Frog Trail within the city limits. Newton Trails had already deployed two waste bins on pet waste stations located at Conyers Street and behind Covington Crossings. Another trash can is located near Gaithers Road just west of Mansfield. More are coming.
Expanded parking - Thanks to our partnership with Newton County, a new parking area has been paved where the Cricket Frog Trail crosses Old Starrsville Road. There are approximately ten new parking spaces.
Cricket Frog Trail shirts - Don't forget that you can purchase a shirt in the color and style of your choice as well as other items bearing the Cricket Frog Trail logo at Rush Tees and Signs on the Covington Square. Every item purchased results in a $5 donation to Newton Trails.
