Informational Meeting for NEW Second Half of Life Book Discussion Group
Thursday, February 11, 6:30-7:30 PM

Please join us for an informational meeting on Zoom on Thursday, February 11, at 6:30 PM to find out more about the NEW SIG “The Second Half of Life Book Discussion”. This SIG will be led by Karen West, a founding member of the TTN MSP Chapter.

After retiring in 2012, Karen read two books that led her to create the fulfilling, empowering life she leads today. First the book Smart Women Don’t Retire—They Break Free—From Working Full-Time to Living Full-Time inspired her to join the effort to create a local chapter of The Transition Network, which has added so much to her life. But being led to the book Falling Upward: A Spirituality for The Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr transformed her life. There are so many amazing books that are helping us take this “second half of life” journey, helping us to explore this exciting and empowering new stage which our increased longevity is making possible.

If you have any questions or want to join this SIG, contact Karen West at karenw0214@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can register at the link below and you will receive the zoom link with your registration confirmation.

TTN members and non-members are invited to join this introductory meeting.

Wellness Wednesday: Tapping
Wednesday, February 17, 11:00 AM-12:30 PM

Join us for our Wellness Wednesday on February 17 as we learn a simple self-help technique for feeling better. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques or tapping) can be very helpful for fears, anxiety, troubling memories, limiting beliefs, unresolved problems, physical challenges, or anything that’s bothering you. And, happily, it’s easy to learn! We simply tap gently on specific energy points on our own bodies, while making a statement about something that bothers us, along with words of acceptance. Susan will guide us in learning about EFT and practicing it.

Susan Temple is the mother of five daughters and a former kindergarten teacher. A few years ago, her 30-year marriage ended suddenly, and she was faced with reinventing her life. Part of that process led to her certification as an Accredited Certified EFT Practitioner and Board-Certified Life Coach. You can learn more about Susan’s offerings at www.lifecoachsusantemple.com.

TTN members and nonmembers are invited to attend. Register at the link below and you will receive the zoom link with your registration confirmation.

Wellness Wednesday: Contentment and Joy are always One Thought Away and Key to Living Well
Wednesday, March 31, 11:00 AM-12:30 PM

What if you knew beyond any doubt that being content, at peace or joyful was really only one thought away at any given moment? What would that mean for your life: relationships with family and friends, work, hobbies, how you spend your day, view of the world…?

On Wednesday, March 31, at 11:00 A.M, please join Mary White, a Licensed Clinical Counselor and Personal Coach who will share information on an understanding of the Mind that is “hidden in plain sight.” This will be an interactive presentation where participants will be encouraged to reflect, question, explore, share stories and insights.

JANUARY EVENT RECAP SECTION
January Get Connected
Submitted by Pat Burgraff

On January 13, ten women gathered for an enjoyable Get Connected Event. After checking in with each other and sharing our experiences during the holiday season, we opened the discussion with “What is the best thing you consumed lately?” Members shared titles of books, movies they had watched, foods they had tried, and ideas for intentions for the New Year.

Open Meeting of Finance SIG with author, Laura Gilbert
Submitted by Cyndy Nelson

On Tuesday, January 19, 33 women gathered via zoom to hear local author, Laura Gilbert, share the concepts from her new book, Enough: A Retirement Life that Works for Me. This is a short and very interesting book that looks first at the retirement life one wants and then layers on the financial resources required to support that life. Laura shared that the question is actually not "Will I have enough?", but "Will I be ok?" where each individual defines what "ok" is for them. It turns out money is only one of the tools to be “ok” in retirement. For more information, check out the article in NextAve.

CARING COLLABORATIVE
Submitted by Tracey Baker

After several months of information gathering, discussion, and planning, the Caring Collaborative is preparing to launch a pilot program to bring the service and information exchange to members who join.

The Caring Collaborative is pleased to invite you to join the pilot program, which will begin this spring.

Why should I consider joining? To provide assistance to fellow TTN chapter members and to be eligible for services and support for medical issues you may experience. Services may include transportation, visits, home services, etc. During Covid-19 many direct contact services such as driving to medical appointments or home visits will be limited.

What are the requirements? TTN Minneapolis-St. Paul chapter membership, a commitment to attend training (through Zoom), a pledge to respect confidentiality and boundaries of members who share information or request services, and a willingness to receive requests and occasionally provide information or services to other Caring Collaborative members.

You can learn more about the program, ask questions, and provide suggestions for what you’d like to see at the February 24 Wellness Wednesday program. If you are interested in joining the pilot project, please email us at mspcaringcollab@thetransitionnetwork.org.

Our popular Wellness Wednesday programs will continue and are open to all members. Information about the three wellness programs planned in February can be found earlier in this newsletter.
TRANSITION PEER GROUPS
NEW TRANSITION PEER GROUP

A new Transition Peer Group for working women is ready to launch on Monday, February 22, at 7:00 PM. Women looking to connect, form friendships and explore topics in a supportive, shared leadership environment are welcome to join. Please contact Barbara at barbara.osullivan@hotmail.com to receive the Zoom link or if you have any questions.
TRANSITION PEER GROUP - Life Animated
Submitted by Sylvia Mohn

The group met on January 14 to create vision boards for 2021. This was a return to an exercise from January 2020. Some of us had started thinking about categories, and words to use, but no one had created a board with visuals. One person felt her board from last year was superficial while another liked her board from last year.

Creativity/Resourcefulness is our topic for our meeting on Thursday, February 11, at 10:00 AM. Questions we will consider:

  • What kinds of creativity are represented in our group?
  • What kinds of creativity require special training?
  • What kinds of creativity don’t?
  • What conditions foster creativity in adults? in children?
  • Can creativity be taught?
  • Is creativity a good thing?
  • Can we become creative/artistic over our lives even though we’ve not been so before?
  • Was creativity necessary in our work lives?

All Minneapolis/St. Paul TTN members are welcome. We meet the second Thursday of the month from 10:00 AM-Noon. We are currently meeting via Zoom.

Please contact Eleni Skevas at eskevs@yahoo.com if you are interested in joining this group.

TRANSITION PEER GROUP - Living with Purpose
Submitted by Barbara O’Sullivan

Our January meeting was devoted to what is now our annual event of creating our Vision Boards for 2021. The experience was of course different this year as everything is. We co-created together over Zoom and shared our results.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 25, from 6:30-8:00 PM. We will have a follow up discussion related to our Vision Boards focused on what we want to continue doing in 2021 that we discovered in 2020 and what new things we plan for 2021. We will discuss actual activities as well as more energetic qualities we want to add to our life in body, mind and spirit. Vision Boards are not required for our February meeting if you were not able to join us at our January meeting.

All Minneapolis/St. Paul TTN members are welcome. We meet the fourth Thursday of the month from 6:30-8:00 PM. We are currently meeting via Zoom.

For more information or questions, please contact Barbara at Barbara.osullivan@hotmail.com.

TRANSITION PEER GROUP - West Metro
Submitted by Jean Forrey

On Monday, February 1, we will meet from 1:00-3:00 PM via Zoom. We will have a 5-minute stretch in between hours. Current members have been contacted ahead of time since it is the very first day of the month! We will be discussing the results of a personality quiz we will be taking on our own prior to the meeting. Here is the link to the quiz:

Kathleen Peterson will be directing our discussion due to her familiarity with the subject.

Our January meeting was another good gathering of good women! The nine of us talked about things we are looking forward to experiencing in 2021. The topics ranged from being more intentional to learning the Turkish Get-Up (I had to look that one up as I thought I had written down the wrong thing!) Another person talked about early morning stretching with a woman on TPT.

In terms of how we want our group to proceed, we talked about wanting to explore topics about humanity and exploring opportunities to get to know one another on a deeper level and feel connected. Some want to explore topics regarding social issues and how they affect us personally or share common problems that might affect them as grandparents dealing with issues with grandchildren. We will take turns leading the group with all members given equal opportunities. Jean will continue to write the newsletter articles for now and share Zoom hosting responsibilities with whomever has access.

All in all, we are happy to put 2020 behind us and move ahead with hope for an improved 2021.

All Minneapolis/St. Paul TTN members are welcome. We meet the first Monday of the month from 1:00-3:00 PM. We are currently meeting via Zoom.

If you want to attend our TPG, please contact Jean Forrey at jean.4e@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list and get monthly Zoom info.
Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
Submitted by Erin Campbell and Julie Efta

All of our SIGs are going strong! We have had a strong response from Meetup with new women joining some of our SIGs to see if they should join TTN. Thanks for the warm welcome. Jean Forrey and Erin Campbell have started a new Movie SIG. See the article below to learn more about upcoming movie selections and meeting dates. In addition, there is an informational meeting on February 11 for a new Second Half of Life Book SIG. See the article below.

SIGS are fun and easy! It only takes 2 members to start one, members may come and go, frequency of meeting varies: weekly, monthly, bi monthly, seasonal and women can attend two sessions of a SIG prior to becoming a TTN member. If you want to talk about SIGs, please email the contact listed. If you want to start a new SIG or have a question, please email Erin at ecingb@yahoo.com or Julie at Teacherjulie.efta@gmail.com.
MOVIE GROUP
MOVIE SIG – NEW SIG Looking
for interested participants
Submitted by Erin Campbell

A few of us met on January 6 to talk about the Movie SIG. We decided that initially we will be meeting frequently because this will be a fun activity for us during the winter months. Members will watch the group’s selected movie independently and then we will discuss it at our Zoom meeting. We will be using Prime and Netflix as the platform. Here are the selected dates, times and movies. (We did already meet once to discuss the movie The Glorias.)

Thursday, February 18, 1:00 PM   Sylvie's Love
Sylvie has a summer romance with a saxophonist who takes a summer job at her father's record store in Harlem. When they reconnect years later, they discover that their feelings for each other have not faded with the years. Jean Forrey will be leading this discussion.

Friday, February 26, 1:00 PM   One Night in Miami
On the night of Feb. 25, 1964, in Miami, Cassius Clay joins Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcom X, and they discuss the responsibility of being successful black men during the civil rights movement. Terri Evans will be leading this discussion.

While we are still formulating our format, please be advised that we will start promptly at 1:00. We will most likely open with each person offering a short general impression of the movie with more in-depth questions and discussion following. We would like to encourage active participation by all since all opinions matter and we all learn when we have differing opinions! And you know we will. :)

Please let us know if you have any questions or to receive the Zoom link. We would love for you to join us for one or for all.

Please email Erin at ecingb@yahoo.com or Jean at jean.4e@gmail.com if you would like to participate.
NEW SIG Looking for interested participants
Submitted by Karen West

Please join me for an informational meeting on Zoom on Thursday, February 11, at 6:30 PM, so you can find out more about the SIG “The Second Half of Life Book Discussion” I am hoping to start.

When I retired in 2012, I had no idea what I was going to do with my life, but synchronicity (I am a huge believer in following synchronicity) and two books led me to create the fulfilling, empowering life I lead today. First the book SmartWomen Don’t Retire—They Break Free—From Working Full-Time to Living Full-Time inspired me to join the effort to create a local chapter of The Transition Network, which has added so much to my life.

But being led to the book Falling Upward: A Spirituality for The Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr transformed my life. On the first page of this book, I read: “A journey into the second half of our lives awaits us all. Not everybody goes there, even though all of us get older, and some of us get older than others. A ‘further journey’ is a well-kept secret, for some reason. Many people do not even know there is one. There are too few who are aware of it, tell us about it, or know that it is different from the journey of the first half of life.” (vii)

I was so excited to hear someone say that there is a “second half of life” that is different than the first. And then I was thrilled to learn about “conscious aging,” which is a whole new way of living our lives as we’re aging. Instead of unconsciously drifting into old age and worrying about the diminishment and loss it can bring, the conscious aging movement is creating a new life stage of spiritual development in which we as elders can choose to become more conscious, more whole, and happier than we’ve ever been.

And there are so many amazing books that are helping us take this “second half of life” journey, helping us to explore this exciting and empowering new stage which our increased longevity is making possible.

Please contact Karen West at karenw0214@gmail.com for more information or to join this group. You can also register here and the zoom link will be sent with your registration confirmation.
ART APPRECIATION SIG
Submitted by Tracey Baker

We had a great discussion about the art element of value at our January 13 meeting. Thanks to Terri for putting together a slide show featuring a diverse group of artists and works of art. We were delighted to learn about some new artists, including Agnes Martin, and to appreciate works by other artists in a new way.

Next month at our Wednesday, February 10, meeting from 1:00-3:00 PM, we will round up our discussion of the elements with a focus on space. Space is what lies between, around and within an object. Please send your images illustrating this element to Terri by February 2.

If you are interested in participating or want to be on our contact list, contact Tracey Baker at tracey.baker@gmail.com or JeNell Jacobson at jenell@jacobson.org.

DAYTIME BOOK SIG
Submitted by Eleni Skevas

In January, the group met on Zoom to discuss A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. This was a book of fantasy drawing us into a contemporary world of witches, vampires and daemons. Most of us hadn’t had much exposure to this kind of novel. It provided lots of fodder for discussion. The meeting occurred on January 7, the day after the insurrection in D.C. so of course the group spent much time processing the news and pondering what we as individuals or as a group could contribute to bettering the nation’s woes. That’s the thing about book club; it always seems to lead to discussions about life beyond the covers of the book we’ve assigned ourselves.

On Thursday, February 4, at 10:00 via Zoom, we will discuss Barack Obama’s recently published memoir, A Promised Land. For Thursday, March 4, we will read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from 10:00 AM–Noon.

Question?  Contact Eleni Skevas at eskevs@yahoo.com

EVENING BOOK CLUB SIG
Submitted by Beth Stockinger

We met in January and discussed the book Untamed by Glennon Doyle. We plan to read one more book before we shift to a new focus. We will meet again on Tuesday, February 9, at 6:30 PM. The book chosen for our February meeting is Caste by Isabel Wilkerson.

Here are a few comments about the book:

“Magnificent . . . a trailblazing work on the birth of inequality . . . Caste offers a forward-facing vision. Bursting with insight and love, this book may well help save us.”— O: The Oprah Magazine

“A surprising and arresting wide-angle reframing . . . Her epilogue feels like a prayer for a country in pain, offering new directions through prophetic language.”—Bilal Qureshi, The Washington Post

“A transformative new framework through which to understand identity and injustice in America.”—Justin Worland, Time

We will shift our book group focus as soon as we have enough people signed up for the new Second Half of Life Book SIG which is having an informational meeting on Thursday, February 11. You can learn more about this new group earlier in this newsletter.
EXPLORING FOOD SIG
Submitted by Kathleen Peterson

At our January 11 meeting the Exploring Food SIG members had a lively discussion about the movie Big Night (1996) starring Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub. These two brothers were having difficulty trying to start an authentic Italian restaurant in New Jersey. Our discussion centered around the amazing Italian food that was prepared and served throughout the movie.

In advance of our meeting a number of group members prepared dishes such as Risotto al Salto, handmade Fettuccine, Lasagna, Stromboli, Risotto Trio, Pizza with Cauliflower crust, and Italian Wedding Soup. Photos and tips were shared via ZOOM and appetites were stirred as we adjourned to our own kitchens to contemplate our next culinary adventure …. or to order take-out. We recommend this movie!

Here are the details for our Next Meeting:
Date: Monday, February 8
Time: 4:00-5:30 PM on ZOOM
Topic: CHOCOLATE

“Chocolate is happiness that you can eat.” Ursula Kohaupt

Food SIG members will be exploring all things chocolate during this Valentine’s month. What’s the best kind? Where do you buy your favorites? What do you make with chocolate? We’ll have a brief history of Hershey Chocolates and we’ll do some Zoom sharing of any efforts made at home.

We invite any chocolate lovers to join our discussion. You do not need to prepare anything prior to the meeting. If you are not already a participant but would like to join our discussion in February please let Chris DiPietro know at cmdjp2@gmail.com. You will receive additional information and a Zoom link before the meeting.

For the first half of 2021, the SIG plans to meet on the second Monday of the month from 4:00-5:30 PM.

If you have any questions about this SIG, please contact Kathleen Peterson at kathleenpeterson614@gmail.com.
FINANCIAL SIG
Submitted by Cyndy Nelson

Thirty-three women met via zoom on January 19 with special guest and local author, Laura Gilbert. Laura joined us to present concepts from her new book, Enough: A Retirement Life that Works for Me. We had opened our meeting to women who are not members of our SIG and who are not members of TTN. The women who attended came away with a tool to use to help them identify what they want their retirement life to be and how to consider what that will cost. Thanks to Laura for generously giving of her time and expertise to share this information with us.

Our February meeting is Tuesday, February 16, from 6:30-8:00 PM via Zoom. Our topic will be taxes.

Our March meeting is Tuesday, March 16, from 6:30-8:00 PM via Zoom.

The purpose of this group is to increase our personal financial literacy. The knowledge of members about financial topics varies from beginner to more experienced. Our topics will be selected based on what individual members are interested in. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. New members are welcome. Come and give it a try.

Please email Cyndy at clnelson03@gmail.com if you are interested in joining us, have ideas for topics, or have questions.
FRENCH CONVERSATION SIG
Submitted by Jane Harens

The members of the French Conversation SIG are gradually expanding our vocabularies and topics of discussion. We have moved from holiday words and the tempting topic of French pastries to talk about locations and numbers. Power points, flash cards and the occasional pantomime help us communicate.

We meet via Zoom on Mondays at 10:00.

If you'd like to join us, please email Ginny at ginnyjacobson3@gmail.com or Jane at jane.harens@gmail.com for information.

Hope for a clear night on Wednesday, February 24, or a night before or after to enjoy the rising of a full moon! Best viewing is a spot lacking trees and tall buildings in the East. Sometimes driving east on an open road as it breaks the horizon gives the most awesome experience.

LEGACY WRITING SIG
Submitted by Julie Efta

On January 7, we met and shared our writings and reflections on/about/to the year 2020.

On Thursday, February 4, at 1:00 PM, we will begin writing and sharing components of our Life Review starting with our youth years, age 0-21. This idea is related to the British documentary series “UP” which followed fourteen 7-year-old children from 1964 thru 2019 which was "63 UP”. The director of this series, Michael Apted, recently died. Who will continue the series for “70 UP”? We will be following this model to start the year.

New members are welcome!

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from 1:00-2:30 PM.

If you are interested, have questions, or would like more information please email Karen at  karenw0214@gmail.com.

TRAVEL SIG
Submitted by Marilynne Roberts

On January 26, Travel SIG bon vivants toasted to their many experiences visiting vineyards, distilleries, and breweries, and/or dreamed of their future adventures. Were there new meanings to "Zoom" created? Our lips are sealed, although not as carefully as some wines are corked.

Our February Travel SIG meeting, to be held on Tuesday, February 23, from 6:30 - 8 p.m., will link to Black History Month by examining the experiences of African Americans traveling to Minnesota and making it their home. We ask that you watch the TPT Minnesota Experience program here, before the meeting. If you have ideas that relate to this topic or inspirations for the future that you would like to share with the SIG, please let Marilynne know. The New York Times article here presents museums, sites, etc., that address the history of Civil Rights in the United States. There is also a link to a Road Scholar trip about the United States Civil Rights Trail. That page includes suggested readings. The Zoom information will be sent to Travel SIG members via email. All TTN members are welcome to join us.

Please email: Marilynne Roberts at mkrobertsmn@gmail.com, Debra Dorgan at debra.dorgan@gmail.com, or Julie Efta at teacherjulie.efta@gmail.com if you are interested in joining us, have ideas for events, or have questions.
URBAN HIKING SIG
Submitted by Chris DiPietro

The Urban Hiking SIG explores parks, trails, and new locations in the metro area during monthly hikes. While the group usually enjoys indoor hikes during the winter, this year the SIG is on hiatus until March because of restrictions on indoor gatherings due to the pandemic.

Here’s a preview of what the SIG has planned when we resume activity in March. We’ll have two hikes during the month of March.

The first will be our typical hike at moderately quick pace, focused on capturing the benefit physical activity offers in buoying our moods and keeping our bodies healthy. We usually hike at a pace of about 20 minutes/mile for about 60 minutes and enjoy the scenery and each other’s company as we walk. We usually cover about 2 1/2 to 3 miles of distance.

The second hike will be an “Awe Walk”: According to Psychology Today, an "awe walk" is a stroll in which you intentionally shift your attention outward instead of inward. (You can read more about “awe walks" at this link.) This will be a shorter, slower walk where we’ll focus on observing the objects, moments, and vistas around us (experiencing awe), and enjoy the benefit this type of activity offers in improving prosocial emotions such as compassion and gratitude. This walk will be 30 to 45 minutes in length and cover no more than about 1 mile of distance.

If you’d like more information about the Urban Hiking SIG, contact Chris DiPietro, the SIG’s coordinator at cmdjp2@gmail.com.
WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES
BOOK DISCUSSION
Submitted by Julie Efta

Our reading pace has slowed to adequately discuss the symbolism and meaning of many worldwide myths and stories of the wild woman archetype.

After a month of meetings on Sunday afternoons at 12:30, we are half way through the book and loving such stories as: Bluebird, Vasalisa the Wise, The Ugly Duckling, Butterfly Woman, Skeleton Woman and The Red Shoes.

We will continue to meet through February to complete the book and become more powerful, creative, and knowing as women. It is a delightful experience to not only learn but to meet new women and develop friendships.

Mellissa Cathcart is cohost.
