New Figaro & promotional club leaflet video
Our latest club leaflet starts with the fascinating story of how the over-demand for the car when launched led to Nissan having to create a lottery to determine who would have the opportunity to purchase one.

The leaflet goes on to showcase the unique process of how the four captivating colours were meticulously created from gemstones. Additionally, it offers valuable information about the cost of owning one, giving potential buyers an idea of what to expect.

Kevin discovers wonder polish to use on your Figaro
Watch this video where I use this amazing show glaze on the club car. Poorboy’s World White Diamond is a show glaze for light-coloured cars, leaving a glossy, slick show car shine to your finish. White Diamond hides minor imperfections, such as swirl marks, on your paintwork. At the same time, it increases shine, gloss and slickness.

It really is an amazing product and highly recommended!!!

The Figaro Shop launches three new products
Didcot-based Figaro experts The Figaro Shop contacted us about three exciting new products.
T-Shirts (various colours)
When the Nissan Figaro was first released, it was fortunate enough to have a substantial accessories list in which customers could select parts to be fitted but what about a true accessory for the drivers and owners of these cult classics?

Limited Edition, Planet Friendly, T-shirt – “Happiness is a Journey Best Taken in a Figaro”

Roof tensioner kit (pair)
The Nissan Figaro’s iconic folding roof is covered in hard-wearing, foldable and weather-resistant ivory-coloured vinyl trimming. This trimming is bonded to the structural front and rear roof bows that form the structure of the roof mechanism. Due to its length and in order to keep the length of the roof covering tensioned from front to rear, the Nissan Figaro employs the use of a ” spring and cable” tensioner system that tensions the length of the roof covering when the roof is fully closed.

Front roof bow panel
The single-skin steel rear roof bow offers the physical connection between the roof and the rear window frame whereas the complicated double-skin steel front roof bow connects the folding roof mechanism, roof latches, vinyl covering as well as the inner roof liner together. Their multi-panel shape is extremely difficult to replicate and most repairs to them are usually temporary and involve patching in steel where possible to extend their life but to do their location, this repair seldom lasts.

ULEZ Expansions kills London Figaro ownership
On Tuesday, the cost of driving a Figaro in London has skyrocketed from zero to £12.50 a day or as much as £4,562 a year, if you use your car every day - making it too costly for many owners. This has resulted in a noticeable drop in club membership, from 112 a year ago to just 20 today.

Unfortunately, this could have been avoided had Nissan UK or Nissan Japan not neglected our request for help to achieve Euro 4 emissions compliance. It's frustrating to consider that the club and its members have invested so much in these cars to promote the Nissan brand, yet they have been met with silence in return.

It is incredibly disheartening to learn that Nissan has refused to offer any assistance in resolving our issue. To make matters worse, they have stated the strange reasoning that the Figaro was never meant to be exported outside of Japan. We feel betrayed by Nissan's lack of concern and understanding of our member's situation, and the fact that they are not willing to help us find a solution is incredibly frustrating and annoying. We had hoped that Nissan would be understanding of our plight and would be willing to provide us with some sort of assistance, but it appears that our hopes have been dashed
Pete and Sandra win Most Unique Vehicle.
Pete Pattermore's custom-coloured Figaro, named Sally, has once again captivated audiences and gained well-deserved recognition as he clinched yet another award. The prestigious event took place at the Family Fun Day held at Morden And Classic Car Show, providing an ideal platform to showcase the sheer brilliance of this remarkable vehicle. We have closely followed the journey of this car, which has consistently impressed us with its unique features and impeccable craftsmanship. It is truly a sight to behold, and we highly recommend anyone to witness its beauty firsthand. It is a relief to share this positive news, especially after the unfortunate incident where Pete accidentally damaged the engine by forgetting a polishing rag in the engine bay.

The company is even offering a generous 10% discount to our members, making the investment slightly more affordable. Read more
Figaro fails MOT. Tested on the year of import and not the year of manufacture
Recently, social media platforms have been buzzing with numerous posts discussing the issue of Figgies failing their MOTs due to testing based on the year of import rather than the year of manufacture. This discrepancy has sparked widespread confusion and frustration among Figgy owners and enthusiasts. The discrepancy arises from the fact that MOT tests, which assess a vehicle’s roadworthiness, are often conducted based on the year of import rather than the actual year of manufacture. This misalignment has resulted in unjust failures for many Figgy owners who possess vehicles of impeccable condition but are deemed unfit based on the wrong criteria. Read more
Goodbye to Hanna, daughter of Dolly Webb
It is with great sadness that we share the news of Hanna's sudden passing on the 18th of July 2023, leaving her mother Dolly Webb devastated. Dolly fondly remembers the times they would embark on road trips in her beloved Figaro, with Hanna exclaiming, "It's not just a car, it's a lifestyle!" Their laughter echoed as they drove off in Lucy, their cherished vehicle. Dolly finds solace in knowing that she will forever carry her precious daughter's spirit within Lucy's confines, cherishing the moments they shared for eternity.
Exploded diagrams English translation program
The club is fortunate enough to have a vast collection of Nissan Figaro documentation at its disposal, but a significant portion of it is written in Japanese. Despite this language barrier, the club would like to express their gratitude towards member Emma Harrington for her translation of the Front Arm Diagram. This small accomplishment has served as a catalyst, motivating us to embark on the ambitious task of translating numerous other diagrams. Although the project is colossal and will require considerable effort, we are determined to gradually chip away at it over time. The ultimate goal is to provide English versions of these diagrams, as it is evident that it would greatly enhance their usefulness.
A new category on the website
Rust is the biggest killer of Figaros as once it’s taken hold, the cost of repairs often outweighs the value of the car, leading to its demise. The Nissan Figaro was built in 1991, but like many cars of the time, it has suffered from rust corrosion in certain areas of the bodywork. This could be due to a few design flaws, but it is also important to note that the majority of Figaros spent the first 10 years of their life on the wet roads of Japan and the high rainfall levels compared to the UK could have contributed to this corrosion.

To help Figaro owners identify and check for rust, this new series highlights the areas that are most vulnerable to it. Additionally, it aims to improve the understanding and knowledge of how rust can form and where to look for it before it takes hold.

Ace Cafe London Figaro Meet – Saturday 22nd July
Words and Pictures: South East England Chapter Coordinator Alysha Gellett
Since 2017, I had been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to plan and attend an Ace Cafe meeting with my beloved Figaro. Finally, the day arrived, and attending with my own Figaro was a dream come true. However, luck was not on our side as the weather took a turn for the worse. Thankfully, we were able to take refuge in the cosy cafe, sipping on hot cups of tea. Determined to make the most of the situation, we came up with the idea to park our cars in colour order, creating a visually stunning display.

The resulting pictures were incredibly satisfying, and everyone present shared our enthusiasm for the idea. Despite the weather dampening our original plans, the camaraderie and creativity of the Figaro community made the day unforgettable.
Despite facing a significant number of cancellations leading up to the event, we were not deterred as we were well aware that this was a common occurrence. However, on the day itself, we were faced with approximately 13 no-shows, a phenomenon largely attributed to unfavourable weather conditions.
Nevertheless, this did not have a substantial impact on the overall turnout of the event, and the cars that did make it looked absolutely stunning as they lined up, showcasing the passion and dedication of their owners. We received no end of great feedback from everyone, and it’s made us feel incredibly loved and supported.
A rundown of colours:
7 x Topaz Mist, 3 x Pale Aqua, 8 x Emerald Green, 4 x Lapis Grey, 3 x Purple, 1 x Black, 1 x Pink
2 x Red, 1 x Funky Pao (The Figaro Shop).
We received no end of great feedback from everyone, and it’s made us feel incredibly loved and supported.

Is your Figaro going off its rocker!!
Words and Pictures: Simon Smith
At the top of the Figaro engine is a rocker shaft that holds the rocker arms in place, these rest on the camshaft lobes. When the camshaft turns the lobes push the rocker arm against the valve causing it to open and then close.

If the bolts that hold the rocker shaft in place on top of the engine head become loose. This can then cause the rocker shaft to move, crack and then snap.
As you can see from the pictures below if the rocker shaft is allowed to move they normally break at the weakest point; at bolt holes.

When this occurs the engine usually power is lost or can stop completely, however, damage can occur to the bolt thread holes which will need the top engine head repairing and if you’re unlucky serious engine damage can occur resulting in engine rebuilding.
There are however checks that can be taken to prevent this from occurring. The rocker securing end bolts should be fitted with securing clips, however, with age these quite often crack, and break apart allowing the bolts to be able to come loose. In order to make these checks and access the rocker shaft the rocker cover needs to be removed.

First, the turbo air outlet pipe needs to be removed by undoing the 4 clips over the two rubber pipes which hold the metal pipe in place. Once the rubbers are loose the one nearest the turbo can be slid over the metal pipe, this then allows the metal pipe to be angled away from the turbo and fully removed. Next, the large and small breather pipes need to be unclipped from the rocker cover pipes and moved aside and the electrical connector attached to the throttle body unclipped carefully – there is a metal retaining clip around it holding it in place.

The two small bolts on the top of the rocker cover at the gearbox side holding the bracket for the water pipe in place then need removing allowing the bracket to be pivoted up and away. On the other side of the rocker cover, there is one small bolt holding on the accelerator cable bracket in place.

The top two rocker cover nuts can next be removed and the large round metal washers and rubber mushroom grommets can be removed from the cover, these normally deteriorate and crack and therefore then need replacing.
To remove the rocker cover it’s easier to lift the driver side up and then turn it and lift the whole lot up and away taking care not to damage the rocker cover gasket. If there are any signs of oil around the top of the engine coming from around the rocker cover, or the gasket is old, cracked or deteriorated, then this should be replaced as well.

At this point, the top of the engine is exposed and care must be taken not to let anything drop inside. The first checks should now be made to see if anything is missing, worn or loose. If there are it is recommended that these are replaced.
The diagram and picture show all the parts, below list the Nissan part numbers. These are easily available from your local Nissan dealer and are normally cheaper than elsewhere, always fit proper Nissan parts. As well as fitting the securing clips it’s worth removing all the bolts and using a small amount of Loctite or Thread lock on them to help prevent any movement.

They should all then be tightened to the correct settings, the torque settings from the Nissan service manual are also shown on the part diagram. It is important not to miss the washers or fit any alternatives as without them the bolts will touch the rocker shaft locking it in position and resulting in catastrophic engine damage when attempting to start the engine.
Having refitted all the parts the valve (tappet) clearances should be checked. Full details on how to do this are available on the Figaro Club Technical Forum see below links…

How to replace the Door Sills on the Nissan Figaro [FIGHTING RUST SERIES]
Words and Pictures: Tobyn Brooks (The Figaro Shop)
There are two ways to repair a sill on a Figaro: Rust repair can be done on the sills of a Figaro with a relatively cheap ‘quick fix’ by welding over the top, but at The Figaro Shop we do it differently by totally removing all of the rusted metal and replacing the whole sill to make it structurally stronger and last much longer. The sill of the Nissan Figaro not only forms the shape of the vehicle but also plays a large part in the rigidity of the vehicle’s body. Over time, rust can start to corrode the sills causing unsightly bubbling, major paint defects and in the worst of cases, large holes of rust. As the rust sets into the steel of the sill, it can dramatically affect the strength of the body and is therefore an MOT failure on inspection.
These custom-made sill sections are designed to replace your rusty Figaro’s inner sill. Unfortunately with the age of these vehicles rust is becoming a bigger problem. You will find that when the outer sill panels need replacing, the inner sill section will need to be replaced too. The inner sill repair panel has been designed and developed by ourselves and is machine-formed from Zintec steel to ensure every panel is the same and follows the original shape of the Figaro sill which is hard to replicate by hand at 1500mm in length. It makes it possible to repair the inner sill to a high level, We use these in-house to repair customers’ Figaros to a high standard. Please be aware this is not a generic/universal panel.
HOW THE SILL IS WELDED INTO THE FIGARO
I decided it would be good for owners to know what went on when their car had this ‘open heart surgery’. Although it’s not the most glamorous diagnosis, there is no denying the fact that most Figgys will suffer from rust at some stage! One of the hardest areas for us to describe, and to warrant the cost of repair, is corrosion. Figaros corrode in 4 common places Sills, Arches, Boot Floor and Roof Corner. Today we will focus on the sills as they are the most common MOT failure we see.

Figaro sills are formed in complicated shapes, the layers of box sections press together in order to create the strongest structural integrity. On convertibles especially this is very important. When an owner comes to us with their cherished Figaro, looking for restoration or paintwork, they nearly always leave with a huge smile, sometimes even tears. That’s a great part of our job. The slightly disappointing thing from our point of view is that with sill corrosion repair the car still looks the same, and runs the same, it may on the surface seem that the MOT and invoice are the main achievements!

So, I hope this article will encourage you to see the beauty in all restoration, even the barely visible parts. With this in mind, I hope to outline what we go through in order to make a sill repair in the correct way. These cases often begin with the Figgy owner bringing their car in for restoration, or perhaps the car is here already having failed an MOT on structural corrosion.

Once we have discovered that the sill is rusted our first task is to remove all the chrome trim; we need access. In severe cases, we also need to remove the door.

Silverstone Festival - Friday 25/ Sunday 27th August 2023
Words and Pictures: Kevin Fagan

Spurred on by its ever-increasing popularity, the ‘Silverstone Festival' marked a new era for the venue’s much-loved event with a new name and fresh look for 2023.

Over the three days, we had 11 cars attend. Sue and I only managed to go on the Friday and arrived a bit late but we were happy to be met with 8 cars already parked up and looking great. This year they parked us in the car parks on the tarmac which, to be honest, was not as nice a position as we have had in the past. I always like to be parked on the grass, it just feels much nicer but the event has grown so much over the past years I guess it's a bit of a lottery where they put you. Having said that, our location was central and we did get a number of interested public asking the usual questions.

This was the first outing for our new club brochure and the feedback was really encouraging. In the evening we enjoyed music from the Christians and ABC. Thanks to our members who had to suffer some serious rain showers on Saturday. The cars really did look fantastic.

International Rescue
Breaking down miles from home in a foreign country is everyone's worst nightmare. Read about how Classicline Insurance and The Figaro Shop came to the rescue.
Words and Pictures – Alan Sykes

We booked a trip to Luxembourg with 21 other members of the Figaro Owners Club, and over the months leading up to the trip, I carried out a service and every check you could possibly carry out. We set off to our overnight stay in Folkstone from West Yorkshire on Saturday, May the 20th 2023 then we travelled through France, Belgium and onto our final destination in Vianden, Luxembourg.

The breakdown
After lunch on the last full touring day, we set off back to the hotel but after a long twisty downhill stretch, the car started to hesitate and cut out.

Halfway around a hairpin bend the engine totally cut out, we lost the power steering and the brake assistance slowly disappeared.
We managed to get the car safely into the side of the road, luckily several of the other club members pulled up to assist.

The battery was almost flat, and the alternator was obviously faulty after testing.
Classicline Recovery
At this point, I contacted ClassicLine International's breakdown line phone. Everything went very smoothly, I had to give my location, reg and policy number and they told me that the recovery company would be in touch shortly.

Going forward, the only downside to what happened next was that we then received numerous calls from the UK, the European

breakdown organisation and the garage, I am guessing we received around six separate phone calls and it was a little confusing as to who we were actually talking to.

Unfortunately, the breakdown truck driver didn't speak any English. Still, we managed to communicate using a combination of my wife’s basic French, and my Monty Python-style gestures!!
The Repair and Maz from the Figaro Shop
It was now Wednesday lunchtime and the garage said they couldn't get a new alternator until Monday so the car would not be available until Tuesday. Because this wasn’t acceptable due to the commitments we had at home, I contacted Maz at the Figaro Shop in the UK, he and his colleagues arranged for an alternator to be delivered to the garage in Belgium (just the other side of the border from Luxembourg) on Thursday by 11 am, obviously, these repair costs were down to us.
This was a fantastic response from Maz and his team at the Figaro Shop!! We would have been in a total mess if it wasn’t for them.

We contacted Classic Line on Friday, and they kindly transported us from the hotel in Luxembourg by luxury taxi to the garage in Belgium.

The garage repaired the car at around 1 p.m.
The Journey Home.
We travelled back to the UK without stopping other than for food, fuel, and comfort breaks, we finally arrived home in West Yorkshire at 1 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Reimbursement from Classic Line Insurance.
I submitted all the invoices showing the additional incurred costs to Classicline and included a spreadsheet. Classicline had no arguments with the genuine costs submitted, and the money was transferred into our account very quickly, it was around 3 weeks from submission.
Considering this breakdown package is included in the cost of the insurance policy as standard, I have to say that Classicline's response was fantastic throughout!
Note, all our family cars are now insured with Classicline, the costs are competitive, the breakdown response was superb,
and we can’t thank them enough"

How the club started
Our son Daniel had always wanted a Figaro having seen the car at his local garage when he was just 16. After saving for a number of years (plus a small contribution from his mum and dad!) he, at last, brought an emerald green model in May 2008. See him pictured with Figgy aged just 19 bless him >>

Following the purchase, we searched on the internet for a club in the hope we could attend events and meet other owners. We were amazed that at that time no club existed so the Figaro Owners Club was born!

"We decided to build a basic website and forum which took a few months and on the 1st March 2009, pressed the publish button and waited to see if anyone wanted to join. Within a week we had 10 members, a month 35 and a year 478!"

Today the club has around 1,200 members worldwide in countries including New Zealand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and many more.
