The Latest and Greatest

Family Directories - UPDATE

Congratulations to the KM Explore Pioneers and the Wales Elementary 1/2 classes! These two directories are the most complete!

The rest of the directories have only about 10 students listed on them. Please keep in mind that you must fill out the forms order to exchange contact information with your learner's classmates and their families. Please fill out the directory by September 23rd.

Building a community is important to us. We want our families to stay connected and be able to gather outside of school if they so choose. While building a community is a priority on our campus, so is the privacy of our families' personal information. Therefore, no personal contact information will be given out to anyone with out your consent. This includes for birthday parties, play dates, etc.

To give your consent, you must OPT IN to our grade/class level directories by filling out the following form(s). Once you have done this, you can email Mrs. Schultz in the front office and ask for a copy of the list of respondants. You will be sent the directory during the last week of September, sometime. Please note: this is separate from the directory that you opted into when you signed up for annual registration this year.

School Picture Re-Takes

Your learner's school pictures are stil on their way, so you should not have received them, yet. We do know that the photo company is working hard at getting them out to all of our families and should be ready to send them to your email in the next few days.

After you view them, please know that picture re-takes have been scheduled for October 4th, all day. If you would like your learner to get their picture taken on re-take day, please email your learner's classroom teacher to let them know.

Dressing for the Weather - Update

Thank you to all of those who quickly got their learners prepared for the outdoors. Keep those rainboots and rain coats coming!

We know that kids being outside is as important as their academics inside. We are planning on sending the kids outside unless it is downpouring rain, thunder, or lightning.

To help kids make sure they get the most of their time outside, we are asking that you help make sure your children have extra clothes in their backpacks/cubbies, and are dressed for the weather - including light rain. It would be helpful to have your child keep a pair of rainboots and a rain jacket in their cubbies as well.

Our weather today was a perfect example of this. In years past, we may have had the kids stay indoors on during weather like today. This year, however, we sent the kids outside to run around and get their wiggles out. Thankfully, the weather cooperated and no one got too wet.

Important Calendar Items

Note from the Library and Media Center

Screen Time and Gaming/Digital Use at Home: Students do not spend the entire school day on computers. Please team with your child to set healthy practices at home.

  • Make sure you monitor digital devices at home.
  • Set limits for screen time.
  • Monitor gaming contacts and limit graphic/violent games or shows.
  • Check history and maintain awareness of where your child roams.
  • Establish a routine of balance - physical activity and breaks from screens.
  • Communicate with your child about pros and cons of technology.
  • *Read books with your child or set time for the child to read (to pet, to stuffed animal, to a loved one, etc.)

Designer Dads/Maker Moms group will be NEW this year for "handy" parents to help students tinker, create and innovate. Contact Mrs Wieczorek in the library if you can lend a hand to plan or assist this initiative. Possibly during indoor recess or after school periodically TBD

  • This group will partner with various aged students to: sew, crochet, create cardboard creations, dig deeper in robotics, STEAM challenges, and assist students with ideas they create.  Potentially we generate an idea or challenge each month to gather materials and host interested students/families.

Art Needs LEGO Donations

Blessings in a Backpack

Blessings in a Backpack is an organization that helps to fill the weekend “gap”. This is a time when many children go hungry in our communities. They started bridging the gap by serving 25 students at Hadfield Elementary School in Waukesha, and now serve 3,300 children at 38 schools. They help bridge the gap for these children every week during the school year by filling their backpacks with food for the weekend.

Your child may be eligible to be a recipient of the Blessings in a Backpack program. If you would like to receive a bag of food, and need the food, then you don’t need to do anything. Food will be dispensed in a discreet and caring manner into your child’s backpack. There is no cost associated with this program.

There are many hungry kids throughout our area, and we are trying to make sure that those kids who need the food receive it from our organization. If you wish for your child to participate in the program you do not need to do anything.

If you choose to opt out of this program, you can either: sign the form that will be available at great start conferences and return it school or fill out this Google Form

A Learner's Log - Hearing from the Students Themselves

The students in KM Explore meet together as a 5K-5th group every Thursday morning to work on community building and the Graduate Profile. Last Thursday, we met up in the Dragons Den and watched a video called, Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Marline-Neal. Then we broke into color groups. We did all sorts of activities with names like, building 3D models of our names with Legos, building our names with items from nature like sticks, leaves and wood chips, and creatively wrote our names for a bulletin board.
