A Lovely Tribute to Nancy Schön
On Wednesday night, Newton Community Pride held a lovely reception, interview and tribute for Newton artist and sculptor, 93 year old Nancy Schön with GBH Greater Boston host Jim Braude.

"Make Way for Nancy" was a celebration of Nancy Schön's many contributions to public art. Nancy is best known for her charming bronze sculptures of Eeyore, Pooh and Piglet at the Newton Free Library, the Tortoise and the Hare at Copley Square and the iconic Make Way for Ducklings in the Boston Public Garden.

State and local legislative leaders and arts advocates were in attendance and proclamations were given by State Senator Cindy Creem, Representative Ruth Balser and from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller. The evening was a fundraiser for the newly formed Newton Community Pride "Nancy Quint Schön Arts Scholarship" for high school students pursuing the arts in higher education.

Thank you to our event sponsors Showcase SuperLux and The Street, music performance by Newton South student Alexander Xhoja and coverage provided by NewTV.

Call for Artists "Sit & Let Your Spirit Soar"
Attention artists, an exciting opportunity awaits with Newton Community Pride's latest city wide public art initiative. NCP is accepting design submissions for Sit & Let Your Spirit Soar, a public art installation designed to create community, encourage conversation, and inspire feelings of connection.

19 decorated church pews will be placed in outdoor public gathering spaces and village centers from June through October, 2022. Through signage, passersby will be invited and encouraged to use the decorated pews for outdoor meetings, intimate conversation, or simply quiet contemplation.

Local and regional artists are invited to submit applications no later than April 22, 2022 and creatively respond to the prompt "______ makes my spirit soar."   Winners will be selected by May 15, 2022. A $500 honorarium is available.  Newton high school students, 16 years old or older, are encouraged to apply. More info at www.sitandsoar.org

Sit & Let Your Spirit Soar is presented by The Village Bank and supported in part by a grant from the Newton Cultural Council, a local council supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the City of Newton.

Newton Highlands
The Vault Mural Project
NewCity Church and The Vault, led by Reverend Devlin Scott, has commissioned artists Grey and Leslie Held to paint a mural on the entrance wall in their courtyard of The Vault at 1175 Walnut Street in Newton Highlands.

The Helds have designed a colorful, inclusive and inspiring art piece that radiates community. And in the spirit of the piece and the place it will be created, they are inviting the community to come together to paint it.  Whether you are skilled, formally taught, new to this or just intrigued -- whether old, young or somewhere in-between -- all are welcome to come pitch in!

Sign up to bring this mural to life and participate in this community paint project  here.  The Vault Mural Project is a Newton Community Pride, Community Micro Grant recipient.
