An Important Message from VAM’s Executive Director Rick Hurley
Rick Hurley
As we begin our new fiscal year July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024, I have two exciting developments to report to you.  In order to better serve you, VAM added two staff members to help you with membership questions, plan programming for workshops and conference sessions, and work with you to communicate what is happening with VAM and its members. Our new staff members are Whitney Royster and Kristina Boodram. Whitney is our new Membership and Program Coordinator, and Kristina is our new Communications Coordinator.
Whitney brings her extensive knowledge of non-profit and membership management to VAM. She earned a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from Longwood College. Whitney has a diverse background: including membership, conference and tradeshow planning, marketing, and working for non-profits. She is returning to the workforce after taking some time off as a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of three. Whitney recognizes the integral role museums play in the local community as well as throughout the state. She looks forward to working closely with our members in planning professional, meaningful opportunities for them to broaden their experience and promote their institutions.
Kristina earned a M.S. in International Relations and a B.S. in Mass Communications. She previously interned and became a staff member at Pamplin Historical Park in the Marketing Department. Her last role focused on graphic design and marketing for non-profit organizations. She brings her experience working with small businesses, management, and communications. During her spare time, Kristina visits museums and botanical gardens. Her most recent museum trip was to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. She looks forward to serving the museum community and its members and providing the best experience for museum professionals.
The VAM Board and staff have also been hard at work revamping our workshop series to provide a greater variety of educational and insightful programming to our membership. This includes increasing the number of programs that we will offer and expanding how we conduct our workshops ranging from in-person site visits to virtual webinars and discussions to allow for greater flexibility. In this issue of our e-newsletter, we have a description of our newest workshop to be held in July. We are excited to offer a greater variety of topics ranging from advocacy, working with HR, leadership, and more. Stay tuned as we release the remainder of 2023’s workshops in July!

Scholarship Fundraiser Event Recap
Thank you to everyone who showed up at The Poe Museum and the VAM Trivia Night. This event was hosted by VAM Council Member and Clarke County Historical Association Executive Director, Nathan Stalvey.

A very special thank you to Richbrau Brewing for hosting and supporting VAM Conference Scholarships.
On Thursday, May 11th  the museum community came together at the Poe Museum to raise awareness and funds to support VAM's scholarship fund. VAM’s scholarship fund enables museum professionals who are at the beginning of their careers the opportunity to network and receive the ongoing education that is vital to their career development. These funds support scholarships for 2024 recipients.
