ACC Attends Hill Day 2023

ACC attended the annual Hill Day organized by the Canadian Chamber on April 25-26, 2023. It was a packed 2 day-session of panel discussions and meetings with Senators, Members of Parliament, and key ministerial staff members. The themes of the event were health innovation, digital economy, agriculture, international affairs, transportation, and cannabis. ACC was pleased to engage with elected officials, stakeholders, and colleagues to convey issues of importance on behalf of our Chambers of Commerce and the 16,000 businesses our network serves across Atlantic Canada.

Prince Edward Island Announces Budget 2023

ACC is supportive of P.E.I's budget investments in affordability, skills, and the increased Basic Personal Amount. Government should also take steps to address the growing concerns of the cost of doing business and labour market challenges. While Government made some investment in skills, there is still a greater need for investment in skills and growing the workforce. For more information on the P.E.I Budget, click here.

Newfoundland and Labrador Has Immigration Capacity Increased

ACC is pleased to see that Newfoundland and Labrador received good news to boost immigration numbers. The province has increased its capacity to welcome a total of 6,700 newcomers annually. This development brings a wave of positive implications for the province's labour market, economy, and ongoing efforts to grow its population. For more information, click here

Pooled Registered Pension Plan in New Brunswick

ACC is supportive of new measures introduced by the Government of New Brunswick. The Provincial Government has announced a new Pooled Registered Pension Plan (PRPP). The availability of the PRPP in New Brunswick and other provinces is beneficial for businesses. It provides an additional retirement savings option, attracting and retaining talent. The flexible and low-cost nature of the plan makes it appealing, especially for small to mid-sized companies. The plan's portability and streamlined regulatory oversight simplify implementation and administration. The addition of this plan enhances employee benefits and improves financial security. ACC Applauds Nova Scotia for Investing in Training

ACC has called on Governments to introduce new opportunities for training the workforce. The Government of Nova Scotia has introduced The More Opportunity for Skilled Trades and Occupations (MOST) program. MOST is a refund of the provincial portion of income tax paid on the first $50,000 of income earned by workers in eligible trades and occupations. The program provides training opportunities for those under 30 in the 2022 tax year. ACC believes that this program is a good start to offering training programs, but a broader criteria may attract more individuals or employers interested in pursuing training opportunities. Canada Expected to Set New Immigration Record

Canada is on pace to set a new immigration record in 2023. Canada’s current target is to 465,000 newcomers this year but on the country is on pace to welcome 580,000. ACC applauds the Government of Canada’s ambitious targets as newcomers will provide a needed boost to the labour market. Immigration allows businesses to access a broader range of skills and expertise to enhance their competitiveness and capacity for expansion. ACC’s Annual Policy Priorities highlight the need to expand access to settlement resources in communities and recognize of foreign credentials. This is critically important for Atlantic Canada as we continue to welcome more newcomers to our region. For more information on Canada’s immigration data and goals, click here
