No one should access the building at this time, staff will be working from home as much as possible, and in-person outdoor gatherings are paused indefinitely due to Utah Department of Health guidelines limiting gatherings to 10 people.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. We know that we are called to continue to BE the church in this time and place no matter how we gather! We are still offering our YouTube services and our worship, and music ministry is dreaming of other ways for us to connect and worship.

The latest information about COVID-19 is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and local authorities by visiting cdc.gov or coronavirus.utah.gov.

There are many needs. Please see the link below, browse the website for ideas, or Click on the "Give" or "In-kind donations". *NEW*
Lutheran Disaster Response: Gulf Coast Storms

Beginning Feb. 14, a polar vortex descended over the United States. It is responsible for subfreezing temperatures and heavy snow across the country, impacting millions of people.

The harsh conditions severely impacted Southern states, such as Texas, which lack the infrastructure to handle the freezing temperatures and record-setting snow and ice. This has led to power, food and water shortages throughout the region. At the peak of power shortages, 4.5 million homes and businesses in Texas were without electricity and heat. Around 13 million Texans are also facing water disruptions due to bursting pipes and damaged water systems. As temperatures rise, melting ice and snow is expected to cause even more water damage. With such extensive damage, long-term recovery may include repairing water-damaged homes, disaster case management and supporting vulnerable populations.

Lutheran Disaster Response is communicating with and standing ready to support the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod, the Southwestern Texas Synod, the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod, and Lutheran Social Services Disaster Response. Congregations are already conducting relief efforts such as supplying water, food and generators to those in need and opening their doors to serve as shelters.

Generosity Ministry Team Update

The three initiatives for 2021 are:

Playground Implementation:

The Playground Feasibility Team reported that it is indeed achievable to build a playground, consequently, we are developing a Playground Implementation Team to identify a contractor and obtain bids.

Restroom Remodeling:

The restrooms are not ADA compliant, therefore, a feasibility study needs to be done, looking at what it would entail to achieve compliance. Like we did with the playground, we are establishing a Restroom Update Feasibility Team.

Digital Presence:

Finally, while experiencing a pandemic year, it became obvious that our digital presence had to be updated. There have been numerous people who have helped with the endeavor, but we need to continue to improve our digital presence.

If you are interested in being a member of any one of these three teams (Playground, Restrooms or Digital Presence), please contact Mary Bowman (Generosity Committee Chair) or Marion Lennberg (Generosity Ministry Council Liaison).
We, as a Ministry, are committed to update the congregation monthly about the progress (or lack of progress) of each team. We need your help!
Millcreek Elementary Partnership

Mill Creek Elementary supports a diverse, multi-ethnic population of 350 students (35% Latinx, 30% white, 35% other ethnicity) speaking 24 different languages and dialects. Due to state budget constraints, Mill Creek Elementary does not receive any subsidized funding for assistance feeding the children. 60% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and the pantry at Mill Creek Elementary feeds 40-50 families each week.

Pastor Brigette met with Principal Ann Kane last week and we are excited to support one another! Here are some of the ways you can be involved:

Read to the children!

They are looking for reading buddies over Zoom!
Contact Sarah Waddoups at swaddoups@graniteschools.org or (385) 646-4912.

Stock the food pantry!

Most needed items:

Canned fruit
Canned vegetables
Ranch Dressing (yes really! Kids love it!)
Shampoo
Bread
Peanut butter
Healthy cereal
New coats
New clothes
New shoes/boots
Thank you for your care and generosity! Once we can be in person, there will be opportunities to volunteer at the school as well. For more information contact
Pastor Brigette (pastor@oslcslc.org).
Senior Spotlight: Rod Wendt

As part of the ministry that supports senior luncheons, a new series of member profiles will introduce us to those who attend these monthly gatherings to better connect us all in a time of compassionate distancing.

Q: Where were you born?
I was born on a farm near Jamestown, North Dakota.

Q: Before retirement, how did you spend your time?

I worked as a farmer growing up. I served in the U.S. Army and in Korea. When I came home, it was not farming season, and a cousin suggested I come to Minneapolis for a job at a computer company, so I did. My career was designing and developing computers. I was involved in the design, development and an inventor of the personal computer in 1968. I also was involved with designing the military computer that was used on the USS Kennedy aircraft carrier.
I enjoyed fishing and hunting with my buddies on weekends.

Q: What’s one fact that people are always surprised to learn about you?

When I came to Utah, there was no ice fishing, and I was involved in getting ice fishing started in 1972.

Q: How did you find OSLC? How long have you been a member? What do you love about the community here?

My job was relocating to SLC. My two Lutheran co-workers and I decided to check out OSLC. I have been a member since 1970. What I love about the community here is the friendliness of everyone, and everyone talks to each other.

Q: You’ve been a long time attendee of the senior luncheons. What do you enjoy about this activity?

I like the menu and the theme of food highlighting different countries.I also like that the programs are very interesting and educational. I enjoy learning new things.

Q: How have you kept in touch with family and friends during this unusual COVID-19 pandemic? What has kept you going during quarantine? Have you picked up any new hobbies or spent your time in new and different ways?

I keep in touch with family and friends by phone calls. My twin daughters who live nearby call me every day. Every Monday, they both come to my home and they bring lunch and stay for a few hours. What has kept me going is the love from my family -- 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

My new hobbies are adult coloring books using colored pencils, and 1000 piece puzzles. I still enjoy reading and listening to my CDs of classical, semi-classical and jazz music.

The Coalition of Religious Communities

St. Paul wrote to the church at Corinth:

"See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!" (NRSV)

And now is the time for our caring community at OSLC to show we care about those experiencing homelessness.

The Coalition of Religious Communities (CORC) -- a social advocacy project of Crossroads Urban Center -- offers that opportunity during the 2021 Utah Legislature Session. CORC has weekly "Hunger & Homelessness Updates" and many other opportunities to learn and have our voices heard by elected officials about hunger and homelessness in Utah. "God's Work - Our Hands"... And Voices!

The project is still in full swing. No, we don't meet for blanket making day. Yes, we do make blankets constantly and we are ready to distribute 175 blankets next week to those children who need a blanket hug (even though we can't physically be close to them).

Blanketeers have been busy working at home. I have been shopping on-line for materials that have been delivered. I have been dropping off fabric and yarn to my workers' front porches and have been picking up finished blankets from their porches. We are careful not to be too close physically - but are in touch regularly.
The work goes on!

~ Millie

What can you do to support and contribute to Project Linus? Our volunteers hand-make new blankets for children from birth to 18 years old. The blankets are given to children who are ill, or in other ways need of a security blanket hug. Blankets can be flannel, fleece crochet edges, quilts, knit, crochet, or fleece fringe (made by specific pattern). Child friendly patterns and colors are preferred. Also, cash donations can be made directly to OSLC. To find out what to contribute and see blanket patterns visit slcprojectlinus.blogspot.com
Please collect the "pop-tops" from cans and save them at home. When the church re-opens, they can be added to the jar in the Round Room. Dorothy Purdie will then take them to the Ronald McDonald House .
