Meet The Founder Who Raised $5 Million To Help Caregivers Provide Quality Healthcare To Elderly
"Carewell, which raised $5 million in seed funding this year, streamlines the care process through educating the 53 million caregivers nationwide while providing them with the right tools and products needed to provide adequate care. According to a 2020 report by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, more than one in five Americans are caregivers. Many of these are informal caregivers—children or grandchildren—who lack the expertise and knowledge to properly care for their relatives, Padilla said. By 2030, more than 20% of U.S. residents will be over 65 with “skyrocketing rates of diabetes, Alzheimer’s and heart disease,” she said. Padilla saw a need in this sector and felt it was “incredibly fragmented” when it came to researching and buying specific products. Offering tailored care, carefully tested products on its e-commerce site and rapid shipping across 48 U.S. states is important in helping the now-aging baby boomers stay in good health and out of hospitals, she said."

What a Biden Administration Could Mean for Caregivers
"'President-elect Joe Biden will start his term with a deeply divided country, raging pandemic, and uncertainty in the economy,' says Lindsay Jurist-Rosner, the CEO of caregiving benefit provider Wellthy. 'Biden's care plan, which will provide child and elder care support infrastructure is timely and critical. By investing in homecare workers and childcare centers, working families will have the support they need to stay in the workforce.'"

Debbi is one of 14% of caregivers who identify as African American. African American caregivers, and caregivers within other minority groups, experience special challenges compared to White caregivers. According to recent research from The Gerontologist, relative to white caregivers, Black caregivers more often provide in excess of 40 hours of care per week, and are more often caring for an individual living below the federal poverty line. Debbi reflected on the unique challenges she faced as an African American caregiver, such as through the prejudice and harassment from her neighbors.
Debbi also faces another set of unique challenges being the caregiver of an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD). Like many caregivers, Debbi’s journey with caregiver led her to be an advocate for her son.

November is National Family Caregivers Month! |

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. Family caregivers manage health emergencies, juggle priorities, and suffer isolation - and all that was before COVID. The pandemic brings even more challenges as family caregivers handle caring during a crisis. The Caregiver Action Network has chosen "Caregiving in Crisis" as the theme for 2020’s National Family Caregivers Month. During NFC Month 2020, CAN and its partners will be addressing the new realities family caregivers face with their loved ones during these uncertain times. CAN will also be releasing five essays throughout the month related to this year's theme. Topics include long-term care, risk during the pandemic, tele-health, home environment, and mental health.

NAC Invited You to the 2020 World Carers Conversation
COVID-19 has created new opportunities to re-examine the way that health care is delivered and the role of family caregivers in supporting better patient outcomes. Much like the WHO’s COVAX initiative to share data and research on caregiving and COVID-19, global partners in caregiving can offer insight and learnings that may make solutions for families more readily accessible to other caregiving communities around the world. The World Carers Conversation, to be convened from Sunday, 13 December 2020 through Wednesday, 16 December 2020, will showcase cutting edge caregiving research, innovation, and impact around the world as we collectively face the fallout from the global pandemic. The Pickering Caregiving Lab is currently conducting a national study funded by the National Institute on Aging. Participants in the study must be adults who provide unpaid care to people with dementia. Participants get paid to document their daily experiences with caregiving.

New Caregiving Research from Mental Health America |
|
"In recognition of National Family Caregivers Month, Mental Health America (MHA) released a new report, The Strain of Caregiving: How Caregiver Involvement Reduces Distress and Conflict, which explores whether family caregivers feel involved in the care of their loved ones, if involvement has an effect on their levels of distress and conflict in providing care, and the hope they have for their loved one’s recovery.
Based on these findings, MHA offers several recommendations for more effective engagement of caregivers, including changes to systems of care that can help to reduce distress and conflict that contribute to the strain of caregiving.
