PLANT OF THE WEEK

Paeonia AKA Peony

Well if it isn't my all time favorite flower. And why the heck wouldn't it be? A gem of a plant; these troopers live for a generation or more with little to no attention. Their early summer flowers are irresistible in the landscape and as cut flowers, peonies have no rivals. Alone or in mixed bouquets, they have an elegant natural beauty and some varieties have a delicate, unforgettable perfume. They prefer to grow in mostly full sun although some dappled shade (especially for the tree varieties) can be welcome.

They all fit into three main categories: tree, herbaceous, and itoh (which is a cross between the other two). Peonies usually bloom from late spring to early summer, with early, midseason, and late blooming varieties enabling you to extend the flower show.

Peonies should be grown in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slight alkaline pH. Over time, peonies develop a large root system and become difficult to move. When planting, take time to site your peonies in a place where they can grow happily for many years. Once established, the plants are relatively drought resistant.

We have every peony you see pictured in stock now! It's peony central here at Garland Nursery. They are emerging, setting buds, and getting ready to bring joy to all who gaze upon them.
