BEACH WATER TESTING
It’s swimming season! Across Massachusetts, it’s not uncommon for recreational beaches to be temporarily closed due to bacteria levels. This is why the Swampscott Health Department collects a weekly water sample from all town beaches.

Bacteria counts are often higher 24-48 hours after heavy rain. Please keep an eye on your favorite local beach for any posted warnings about bacteria levels or look up the beach opening status online.
TESTING PROCESS

  1. The Health Dept. takes a water sample
  2. Bathing water samples that are found to contain levels of bacteria that exceed regulatory standards on 2 consecutive days (or the average of the 5 most recent samples) must be posted advising swimmers of an issue
  3. Beaches remain posted until a satisfactory sample is obtained
WATER & SEWER LINE MAINTENANCE
There's a lot of work that goes into maintaining the water and sewer mains that provide essential service to our homes and businesses. This summer, DPW has been hard at work repairing mains on Berkshire St., Hampden St., Andrew Rd., Farragut Rd., and more in preparation for re-lining.

In order to increase the volume of water that passes through the main, the Town is working on relining the pipes. This consists of digging pits at various points along the main, scarifying the interior of the main, and then lining the main with cement. Resident water service may be disrupted at the conclusion of the project while homes are removed from the bypass piping. This project will last for 3 months and is 50% complete.
STACY'S BROOK SEWER MAIN
REHABILITATION PROJECT
In March, the Select Board was given a thorough update on the Stacy's Brook Sewer Main Rehabilitation Project and the Town's ongoing efforts to identify and eliminate sanitary sewer discharge from Stacy's Brook onto King's Beach.

Stacy’s Brook is an underground drainage system that empties onto King’s Beach at the Lynn line that is undergoing a multi-phased process to address water quality issues. View the informative presentation about the status of Phase 1.
