Celebrating 50 Years of BCAC
BCAC is a community based organization that is dedicated to the enrichment of the Berryessa Community in North San Jose. We are concerned and interested residents of the San Jose City Council District 4 and all of the Berryessa Union School District.
Very few community organizations have the longevity and record of accomplishments that Berryessa Citizens Advisory Council (BCAC) does. Their dedication and service have made Berryessa a better place to live and I’m honored to join this amazing organization as they celebrate their 50 year anniversary.

Organize an Event in Your Neighborhood!
I had a great time joining Mike Kraus and the rest of the Penitencia Neighborhood Association for their Dumpster Day Event. My office picked up the bill for the dumpster, and we can do the same for your group! Neighborhood Associations are important to the longterm goals of our communities. If you’d like help getting an organization started in your neighborhood, get in touch with my office.
Do you want to help make a difference in your neighborhood? Are you part of a group looking for ways you can give back to your community? Litter Pick-Ups and Clean-Up Events are a great way to give back and to make an impact you can see right away! It's also tons of fun and a great way to get some exercise while meeting people and even chatting with local officials like myself and my team. If the parks, creeks, and streets in your area could use a little love, get in touch with my office now to get the ball rolling on an event!

Support San José Artists!
About East Valley Artists:
In 1957, East Valley Artists was founded by a handful of artists living in the eastern foothills of San Jose, CA. They met in watercolorist Mary Mintz’s living room, a small but talented and energetic group. Their intention was to support and encourage each other’s artistic endeavors. From the beginning they welcomed other artists, and anyone interested in art, to join the club.
Today, EVA’s membership hovers around 45 to 50 —we are still a small group compared to many other Bay Area art associations. We encourage excellence in craft and mastery of the skills involved in all the media chosen by our members. We also applaud the expression of creative inspiration that breaks rules and finds new paths in old substance.
EVA encourages excellence and innovation among its artists by providing a supportive environment that is friendly and welcoming. We believe fostering a community of artists who pitch in to accomplish club projects, like our annual juried members show, leads to productive collaboration and exchange. Our community assists artists in honing their skills and colludes in the expression of their creative risks. We do this by keeping our standards high and our hearts open!

With the first day of school fast approaching, preparing youth for the academic year is top of mind for families. Whether families are inquiring for information about childcare, early education, or support for youth with or without disabilities, resources are available through the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE).

As a community, we can work together to ensure the success of youth in our communities by supporting the whole student and their healthy development this new school year.
We are #StrongerTogether.
Be well,
Mary Ann Dewan, Ph.D.

BART Maintenance Projects
BART will soon perform preventative maintenance work in areas all over San José to protect the system from fallen trees.
Approximately 35 hazardous trees, between the Union City and Fremont BART stations, have been identified for pruning or removal. Work is scheduled now so trees with the greatest potential to impact BART operations are removed well ahead of winter storms. Last year, fallen trees derailed two trains and delayed train service on multiple occasions.
This important safety work will take place on three non-consecutive weekends in August and September. During these weekends, train service between the Union City and Fremont BART Stations will be replaced by a free bus shuttle, which could result in delays of up to 30 minutes. The construction weekends are:
· August 26 – 27
· September 9 – 10
· September 23 – 24
In addition to tree pruning and removal, BART will perform track improvements and station maintenance. Tree work will take place from 7am – 7pm and include the use of chainsaws and woodchippers. Other construction activities will require lights and equipment with backing alarms for worker safety.
You can learn more about BART’s efforts to remove hazardous trees on the BART project website.

Closing 87 For Construction
Caltrans is scheduled to close Northbound and Southbound SR-87 on two weekends between late September 2023 and mid-October 2023. During the 56-hour highway closures, Caltrans will perform major pavement repair work on northbound and southbound SR-87
in Santa Clara County. One traffic direction on SR-87 will be worked on at a time. Detours will be in effect. All work is weather and conditions dependent.
| |
WHY THE WORK IS NEEDED?
The purpose of the project is to improve ride quality, enhance safety,
and extend the service life of the pavement. These full weekend
closures are necessary for worker and public safety during the work.
Caltrans will perform major pavement rehabilitation on the two center
tra c lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions of
SR-87. The roadway has become worn and in need of major repairs
due to decades of high traffic use.
CLOSURE WILL START FRIDAYS AFTER 9 P.M. AND CONCLUDE
ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAYS NO LATER THAN 5 A.M.
These closures will allow for concrete pavement in tra c lanes to be
replaced. These closures will shorten the duration of the project by
providing improved safety and better ride quality to the public. These
series of weekend SR-87 closures will reduce the number of overnight
lane closures needed to complete this work by 2024 instead of
completing in late 2025.
(BETWEEN I-280 AND SR-85, SAN JOSE CA.)
SOUTHBOUND/NORTHBOUND CLOSURES
NORTHBOUND - WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 22
SOUTHBOUND - WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 20
If you have a question or want to share a concern, please call our Project Hotline at (510) 286-0319. Or you can contact sr87pave@dot.ca.gov.
You can also learn more about the project on our Caltrans Bay Area project website at:

Who's making a big difference in our community? A great teacher, business owner, a police officer who goes beyond the call of duty. Maybe there's someone spending their free time organizing creek clean-ups or blanket drives for the unhoused... If you've got someone special in your neighborhood, let us know by nominating them to be a District Hero!
