Still Waters Adult Day Center News & Updates
Still Waters Adult Day Center is a person centered, faith based, and activity rich center for our seniors. We provide a safe place Monday - Friday for seniors to engage with other seniors to encourage social, emotional, and physical well-being.
Arts, Arts, and More Arts coming to the center!
We are so excited to receive funds from the Indiana Arts Commission to provide additional arts programs at Still Waters Adult Day Center this coming year. Stay tuned to see the additional programming we will offer with this amazing support! This activity is made possible in part by the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administrations Division of Aging.
With the support of this grant, we will bring in Bongo Boys, Creative Nature, and Arts with a Purpose over the next 12 months!
We will also partner with Elijah Stephen of 22 starving artist and Julie McColley Hill for additional art workshops from the support of this grant!

We also received support from the CUMC Endowment to provide Rhythmic Wellness to the center. Bongo Boys will be coming to the center September, October, November, and December! They will use drums to focus on enhancing the well-being of our guests through rhythm and movement.
Building community one seat at a time
When Ethan Logan approached us to build 4 new benches for our community garden we were elated! With the support of AARP, we were able to expand our current garden but needed a place for gardeners to sit back and relax and converse with fellow gardeners. Thanks to Ethan Logan from Troop 276. He built 4 benches for his project to become an Eagle Scout.
If you haven't come by to look at the new and improved garden feel free to stop by. This garden has provided a place for the community to come together and feel supported by other community members. It has been a fun experience to see novice gardeners learn from expert gardeners.
Thanks to Second Helpings for supporting us!
Thanks to Second Helpings for providing us with 6,343 meals and 736 pounds of food! With the support of Second Helpings, we were able to save over $23,272! Second Helpings has operated for more than 20 years addressing hunger and poverty in Central Indiana. Each day, Second Helpings volunteers and staff rescue prepared and perishable food from wholesalers, retailers and restaurants – preventing unnecessary waste. That rescued food is used to create more than 4,500 nutritious meals each day that are distributed to more than 90 social service agencies, including Still Waters, that feed Hoosiers in need.
Using that same rescued food, Second Helpings Culinary Job Training program prepares adults with barriers to employment for careers in the food service industry. This helps eliminate hunger and poverty at its source. More than 900 adults have graduated from this program. Second Helpings alumni are working in Central Indiana as cooks, executive chefs, business owners and culinary instructors.
To learn more about Second Helpings visit them at Indianapolis Hunger Relief Agency - Second Helpings.
Thanks for your support!
Volunteer Spotlight- Mark and Greg
Still Waters couldn't be as magical without our amazing volunteers! We use volunteers to bake birthday treats for our guests, provide programming, and support our daily lunches.
Our Wednesday lunch crew is Greg and Mark. Both these volunteers do much more than work in the kitchen. Mark began his journey with Still Waters when his mother, Ms. Ester, came to the center in 2017. Mark wanted to give back to the center, so he started volunteering for us! Not only does he volunteer during lunch, but he also volunteers for the flower sale!
Greg attends CUMC and wanted to give back so he started volunteering in the kitchen. But soon we discovered his knowledge of technology, so we have used him in so many other volunteer roles to support the center with the flower sale, grants, and budgets!

Creating opportunities for future leaders
This fall we were fortunate to receive funding from the IUPUI Office of Community Engagement to bring in an intern for marketing and public relations. We will be excited to have them help us develop new marketing and public relations initiatives. Look for our Giving Tuesday campaign!
We have also been selected to have an art therapy intern from IUPUI to provide group and individual sessions with our guests this coming school year.
Both of these interns will be terrific additions to our Still Waters family. Their contributions and service will give them valuable experience and leadership skills while working with our seniors and as future nonprofit leaders.
We love to support our future leaders and prepare them for the workforce by providing hands-on training to launch their careers here at Still Waters.

Aging Well: In a Holistic Lens
Art Exhibit I Conversation I Meditation

Join visiting artist Julie McColly Hill for our winter wellness series. To launch the series, Julie will share a collection of art panels that she created for the Living Well With Dementia Conference held last spring in Indianapolis. This eight-panel exhibit features two sets of images. In the first set, the artist applies a holistic perspective to unpack the meaning of Dementia Friendly Environments using the language of symbols. The second set of images is a multi-media abstract expression of the first set. The inspiration for the abstract re-interpretation came from Julie’s personal experience as a caregiver.

Julie’s mother was one of the first participant at Still Waters. She and her family successfully applied this “holistic perspective of aging well” to navigate difficult family conversations and decisions regarding her mother's plan of care. With hindsight, Julie also credits routine meditation practice as being instrumental in managing the stress of balancing work, family, and the role of caregiver.

This winter, Julie will lead a routine meditation practice on Tuesdays from 3-4:30p.m. During each session participants will explore a variety of mediation techniques and discover the foundational difference of the eastern and western approach to medicine. Suitable for people of all ages and perfect for beginners, this meditation practice is intended to be an introduction to the mind, body, spirit connection. The program is free and open to the general public. Reserve your spot today.
