My mother Marjorie was an avid reader, but only gave more time to it when she and my father retired and when she stopped knitting and doing crafts due to stiffness in her hands. When my dad died and we teamed up, she enlisted me to get her books from our Wadsworth Library. She mostly read nonfiction and biographies, being interested as she was in people and their lives and true adventure. She did enjoy Maeve Binchy books and Ann Tyler.
She kept a list around the time I became “caregiver” or “carer” as she called me at age 80 or so. (The list was so that she wouldn’t read the same book twice.) It started with a good biography of Jackie Robinson the baseball player and one of the last also very good Touching My Father’s Soul by Jamling Tenzing Norgay.
The last entry from 2020 was number 662 although she also read a biography of Sally Ride that year. I want to say that this impressed me a lot, but then again, most things she accomplished impressed me.
Now I want to tell you a couple or so of the books she liked the best in case anyone is looking for a good recommendation:
