"The World’s on Fire
(and We Still Fall in Love)"
Rev. Erin J. Walter
10:45 a.m.
The new year starts with renewed energy and purpose, even in a pandemic. Drawing upon scripture, spiritual practice, and original music, Unitarian Universalist Rev. Erin Walter will reflect on how to foster joy and gratitude in the midst of our ongoing struggles.
Rev. Erin J. Walter (she/her/hers) is a minister, activist, and musician based in Austin and winner of the 2017 Sermon Award from the UU Women’s Federation. A former YMCA director, Rev. Erin is the singer/songwriter for the band Parker Woodland, whose music you’ll hear in this service. She serves as a board member for the Texas Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry and the Affiliated Community Minister of Wildflower (Unitarian Universalist) Church in Austin. You can find more about her music and ministry at ErinWalter.com.

This Sunday in Children and Youth
Religious Education (CYRE)
|
This Sunday we expand the limits of our IMAGINATION as we venture to "Think Outside the Box." Join us as we create and invent together!
VIRTUUAL CYRE meets at 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Children, youth, and families are all invited!
Caregivers are encouraged to help their inventors gather some materials from around the house this week. These can include recycled items, leftover craft supplies, or other random items to invent with! More details will be provided in the weekly email.
There will be no YOUUTH Group this week or next, join us again on February 7th.
Zoom links will be shared via email and our CYRE Family Facebook group. Contact Harper for more information.

2021 Virtual Auction via Auctria.com
February 1 - 6
Though the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from organizing a live Service Auction this past November, we are using a new software program from auctria.com to host UUCH’s first silent on-line auction. It begins Monday, February 1. So we need donors NOW!
|
|
Go to charityauction.bid/uuch for the auction countdown and more information. Then hit the blue Donate button to input your donation information; it’s user-friendly, and costing UUCH nothing for our current use! Or go here for further information and instructions.
For further information or brainstorming ideas for your own service donation, feel free to contact Stewardship Committee members and supporters Dan McKitrick, Bryan Walls, Lynda Lamitie, Ed Bernstein, or Tim Miller, or email stewardship@uuch.org with your question(s).
Thank you in advance; our last live Service Auction in November 2019 netted UUCH over $9700, but we would be thrilled to just surpass our more modest 2020-2021 budget year goal of $5000.

ZOOM Brainstorming for Expanding Community Garden
Tuesday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m.
WHY: In 2020, a few enthusiastic gardeners planted a demonstration garden to see what might grow well in no-till soil that was not amended or even regularly watered. We harvested some herbs, tomatoes, okra, sweet potatoes, eggplant and cucumbers fall, but the biggest crop was sunchokes. These lovely, tall yellow flowers produce a nutritious underground food source that looks like ginger, tastes mildly sweet, and good both raw and cooked. Small bags of sunchokes DO disappear quickly from the Little Free Pantry.
WHO: All kinds of gardeners, home handy-people, social justice pantry-fillers, and anybody eager to increase volunteer/socializing opportunities during these days of social distancing.
WHAT: ZOOM session to toss around ideas for the 2021 season of UUCH community garden.
WHEN: Tuesday, Jan 26 at 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: The raised bed garden will most likely go where the large pine tree was removed near our north wing because of its outdoor water source and abundance of sun.
HOW: Using Signup Genius, we could offer weekend workdays with no more than 8 slots. A project lead will be on hand to explain the task, provide tools, and provide restroom access if needed.
- lay out garden design
- assemble 4 raised beds
- start seeds at home
- donate seeds or mulch
- Please bring your ideas for creating a bigger, better food source for both our congregation and the larger neighborhood.

“New UU” Class
January 30th and February 6th
10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? Join Rev. Jaimie, the Adult Religious Education Committee, and the Membership Committee as we offer a two-part series that explores important themes in UU congregational life.
We will discuss our worship and theology, history, covenant and polity, faith development, social justice, and membership. This program is particularly focused on introducing newcomers to UUCH, but those of you who have been here for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition. Everyone is welcome!
Mark your calendars now for the Saturday mornings of January 30th and February 6th at 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. for this chance to learn, share, and be together. We will meet via Zoom so we ask people to register to prepare for the number of participants. Contact Adult.RE@uuch.org to register or if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you there!

Little Food Pantry
The LFP is currently heavily used. Please continue to sign up for M, W, F, & Sunday slots. If the slots are filled, you can still drop food off on T, Th, & Saturday. All manners of canned, boxed, and fresh veggies (weather permitting) are great choices. Why folks don’t like dried beans is a mystery. Let’s continue to feed the hungry! A BIG thank you!

Donating by Text or Online
|
|
To give a plate offering to UUCH from your mobile device, text the amount (without dollar sign) to 833-559-0257, and follow the instructions. Text giving is by debit or credit card only.
Like our other online and mobile giving options, this option is through Vanco, is secure, and has a good option for "plate" donations.

Care List
This Sunday at our Circle of Candles:
The Delaceys lit a candle of concern & sorrow – shared with Angela’s permission: As some of you know, Angela Arnold was robbed at knifepoint Friday night. She was moving boxes into her new home at the time. Naturally, she is now having second thoughts about moving into the house at all. She is physically ok, but quite shaken, understandably. The police are investigating, and several UUCH members have jumped in to be present with Angela, and meet her needs. Please contact care@uuch.org if you’d like to learn how you can help Angela recover as much as possible.
Kathy Fisher lit a candle of sorrow: Please hold the family of my neighbor, Beverly Grubbs, in your heart. Beverly lost her life in a house fire last Sunday.
Lynda lit a candle of concern: For our nation's political healing.
Paul and Bridgit lit a candle of concern: Please spare a prayer for Paul's nephew named Peter (age 19) who left college and is now roaming parts unknown.
Sara Coble (she/her) lit a candle of joy: This is our last weekend under the Trump administration!
Harper Goodman (she/they) : Oh gosh! Thank you, LaDawn. I made a mistake by not referencing the author. That book was Let the Children March by Monica Clark-Robinson.
Kathy Fisher lit a candle of concern: Love and support to dear Angela!
John Syster lit a candle of concern: May there be no violence as the inaugural ushers in a new era of hope.
Lynda lit a candle of gratitude: Thankful for the vaccine being offered soon to 75+ members of our community.
Miranda Durbin lit a candle of concern: Sending light and love you to Angela.
Jaimie Dingus (She/Her) and Others lit a candle of joy and gratitude: Salaama! Your voice is gorgeous! What a gift. Willie Robinson: It’s hard holding back these tears. Tim Miller: Same here, Willie. Shalin Mody (he/him): whoa, wow! <3 <3 <3 !!! George Fletcher: Salaama!!! Wow! The Delaceys: SALAAMA!!!!!!! bring it, girl!!!!!! Miranda Durbin: powerful Kathy Fisher: powerful singing, Salaama! thank you! Heather Kyemba: How beautiful, sad and yet triumphant. Vally: Moving! Thank you, Salama and all!
