Wrap-Up of Ministry Month

We have had a month of reflecting on the joy that is found in serving in the many ministries of Good Sam: Worship - Prayer - Serving - Giving.

Thank you to those who offered videos and reflections and to everyone who has signed up.

A quick clarification as we've had many questions on this:

  • If you are currently serving in a ministry, you do not need to "sign up" again. We only need to hear from you if you do not intend to continue serving.

  • And for those who have signed up for new-to-you ministries, be watching for communication from ministry leaders about training and/or scheduling.

ADULT FORMATION HENSLEE HALL CLASS

Beginning This Sunday, Sept. 18 - 9:30 am

We begin with a pause. . .

"When we pause, allow a gap, and breathe deeply, we can experience instant refreshment. Suddenly we slow down, look out, and there's the world."

~ Pema Chödrön

Last spring, Krista Tippett wrote to the On Being audience and community to share that On Being would be evolving from a weekly public radio show to a seasonal podcast.

She also shared that during this time of transition, from the end of the weekly show in June to the beginning of the podcast in early 2023, On Being would offer a weekly newsletter called "The Pause," an invitation to step into the space of transition and pause. . . reflect . . . and breathe deeply.

We will do the same as we begin Adult Formation and follow along with "The Pause" to reflect together on transitions, our connection to the natural world, being lost (and maybe found), mystery, rituals, timelessness, and more.

No reading or preparation is required ahead of time.

No expectation to subscribe to "The Pause" newsletter yourself (though if you have and have been following along, please let Mother Elizabeth know - your experience will help in planning discussion and reflection!).

Please join us on Sunday mornings through mid-October in Henslee Hall at 9:30 am to pause. .

Justice Knox House Meetings

Please Join Us For One Of The Justice Knox House Meetings

FIRST MEETING – NEXT SUNDAY – SEPTEMBER 25 AFTER THE 10:30 AM SERVICE

Erin Keck, Margaret Slattery, and Caitlin Thrash will each be hosting a Justice Knox House Meeting this year.

These meetings are a chance to hear about the work Justice Knox has accomplished over the past six years, to share our stories with one another - what concerns do we hold for our community? - and to commit to join our ecumenical and interfaith neighbors in Justice Knox in addressing these concerns.

Justice Knox has addressed (and continues to address) the problems of affordable housing, education, mental health care, gun violence, and public transportation in Knoxville - what community issue will we add to the list this year? Come be a part of the process!

Caitlin, Margaret, and Erin will be reaching out to past participants and others who have expressed interest. Anyone else who is curious and would like to join, please mark your calendars for one of the following:

  • Sunday, September 25, after the 10:30 am service @ Good Sam in Henslee Hall – hosted by Caitlin Thrash

  • Sunday, October 2, Time: TBD – at the home of Margaret Slattery – hosted by Margaret Slattery

  • Monday, October 17 at 6:00 pm @ Good Sam in Henslee Hall – hosted by Erin Keck

Plan on an hour and a half for the meeting, and please let us know if you have any questions. Questions? Contact the church office at [email protected].

Fourth Friday Fun!

Big Orange Bash!

Friday, Sept. 23

5:30 - 7:00 PM

Join us on Friday, September 23 from 5:30-7 pm in Henslee Hall and the patio for the Fourth Friday Fun BIG ORANGE BASH TAILGATE party! Non-alcoholic beverages as well as orange mimosas, beer, and appetizers will be served. We’ll even have music & games!

Let’s get together and have some end of summer fun. If you can’t stay the whole time, that’s ok. On your way to dinner? Stop by on your way. Had an early dinner? Stop by on your way home….whatever fits your schedule. Come as you are – see you there!

Parents Night Out

Friday, Sept. 30

5:45 pm - 8:30 pm

Our first Parents Night Out is going to be Friday, September 30 from 5:45-8:30. Anna Calhoun and Ann Backus will lead and it will include pizza and a snack, along with a craft and movie.

We ask that you please RSVP to [email protected] if your child(ren) plan to attend so we are sure to have enough help and food. Please RSVP no later than the Sunday, September 25.

Family Promise

Night Without A Bed

October 1

The Family Promise event - Night Without A Bed 2022 - is fast approaching. Family Promise is asking their entire network to spend the evening of Saturday, October 1 sleeping somewhere other than their usual bed, and sharing their picture or setup with the hashtag: #FPKNightWithoutABed22

Registration is open on their website www.familypromise.org where participants can include their family members. Participants & sponsors are encouraged to donate & share our donation page. #NightWithoutaBed is a social media challenge to raise awareness about family homelessness.

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate For Sept. 11 goes to Good Sam FISH Ministry.

Through a county-wide church network, FISH volunteers at Good Sam feed the hungry by delivering groceries. Our Good Sam teams serve in multiple ways: purchasing and stocking the food items; packing groceries into bags; taking telephone calls and entering information onto forms for the deliveries; organizing the delivery teams; and driving or assisting in delivering the bags of food. Your donations will help fund this worthwhile effort. Thank you for your generosity.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. (Please designate that it is for "FISH" in the memo line).
