TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

by Jo Strausz Rosen

We gratefully appreciate so many community volunteers who spend their time supporting JSL. I learned the phrase, “Time, Talent and Treasure” from Jim August, one of the 2023 8 Over 80 honorees, who not only led a distinguished career in advertising, public relations and marketing, but spent years volunteering his time and talent as President of the National Foundation of Jewish Culture and locally as a founder and first president of the Jewish Ensemble Theater. He didn’t stop there. Jim continued in service as an officer of the Federation Board, and on the board of Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education, The Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, JVS (now Gesher), Men’s ORT, the Michigan Jewish Conference, ArtServe Michigan and as an active member at Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Congregation Beth Shalom. A sense of service and a sense of humor, we are grateful to Jim and to all the community leaders who devote their lives to Tikkun Olam.

Juneteenth honors the date - June 19, 1865 - when the last Confederate community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, received word that they had been freed from bondage. We at JSL hope all have a meaningful holiday.

Hechtman’s Life Enrichment Coordinator, Tova Schreiber, leads a monthly discussion called We All Matter. A different topic is chosen each month, and participants are given outlines that help them participate in the conversations. This month’s discussion centered on the topic of Juneteenth.

WORKOUT OF

THE WEEK

Silver Sneakers classes are a great way to stay active. This week's theme pays homage towards Juneteenth by featuring Afro Beat style music.

THIS WEEK'S RECIPE

FRIED CHICKEN FOR FATHER'S DAY

Super quick to prepare, tastes great (better than takeout) and is enjoyed by kids and adults alike which makes it a dinner menu must. This recipe is baked not fried so there is no grease or time spent flipping and frying in front of the oven, but you still get all the delicious crispy coating from traditional schnitzel.

We invite our JSL community of readers to become writers and send in your stories for the opportunity to appear in the Shabbat Shalom Newsletter. Relevant stories about aging, volunteerism, living our best lives, inspirations, and mindfulness will be appreciated. Funny, sad, poignant, newsworthy, nonpolitical pieces are welcome. GUYS' DAY OUT

Meer Apartments residents Steven Meyers, Seymour Ross, Bernie Jonas, Fred Krainen, Irving Dunn, Allan Grundy and JSL driver, Bob Van Fleet, enjoyed some grub and manly gab at Farmington Hill's Craft Breww City June 13th. The Meer men shot pool and had many laughs, with a menu of craft brews, onion rings, burgers and sandwiches. They did not let their walkers stop them from "shooting the breeze" and just enjoying the day. As they all said, "Sometimes, it's good to go out as just the guys."

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

ACT ON IT

A good reminder may be to “Live once, Think twice.”

There is so much we see and hear each and every moment. Each one of those sights and visions are worthy of their own scrutiny.

Two decades ago, a senior I used to visit on the east side would always charge me with the mission of making my children curious. As a Rabbi, I could not stop with that. I would urge my children and students to act upon their discoveries. Pursue a positive deed in conjunction with what you have seen or heard.

My older brother serves as the Chabad Rabbi in a little town called Acton, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.

He brought me down to spend Shabbot with his congregation. I shared with them that the name of their city, Acton denotes to "Act-on". "You are granted the daily mission of "Acting on "your faith and tradition."

Thinking is even more purposeful when taken to the next level.

Take Action!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
