Dear Fellow OA Member:
GIFTS
When you hear the word "gift," what comes to mind -- giving or receiving? What kind of gift do you think of -- something tangible that you can see, hold, touch? Or, is it something else, like the gift of a helping hand, a listening ear, or unconditional love? How about the gift of abstinence? Gift of recovery? Gift of a relationship with a higher power? And, then there is the gift that got most (or all) of us into the rooms -- gift of desperation!
Well, here we are in December and so much attention is focused on giving gifts -- that perfect something. For those of us in Overeaters Anonymous, we have a wonderful opportunity to give something so special that money can't buy it. On
Tuesday, December 12th OA World Service and its 6,500 meetings worldwide will officially recognize
"Twelfth Step Within Day" --
carrying the message to those who still suffer within the rooms. Let's face it, not everyone attending meetings is joyfully abstinent or experiencing the peace that accompanies recovery from compulsive overeating. That includes newcomers, people who have been around for a long time, those who are slipping and sliding, and other members who are in the grips of relapse after a period of abstinence.
What gift can you give to that fellow member today? A phone call? A few minutes after a meeting to chat? Sharing your similar experience? A kind hello and how are you doing (really doing)? Hope? YOU are a gift -- to that person, to your meetings, and to OA as a whole. Give the gift of YOU today.
My hand in yours, Leslie
PS: Check out the acronyms for G.I.F.T.(S.) in Treasure Chest.

New Location: We are so very excited to announce that after a long search by multiple Intergroup reps, Ocean and Bay Integroup has a new meeting location! As of January 2, 2018, OBI will meet at Arnold Conference Center in the Regan Building, 111 Howard Avenue, Cranston. This location is easily accessed from Routes 95, 37 and 295. Howard Avenue runs between Pontiac and New London Avenues (link to ma). The space is handicap accessible and there is a place our literature cabinet!
Mini Workshops in 2018: The 12 mini workshops sponsored by OBI and held prior to the monthly meetings in 2017 were a success. At the December Intergroup meeting, members will discuss where to go with the mini workshops in 2018. A couple ideas being considered include taking the workshops on the road and the possibility of different groups sponsoring them. If you have some ideas to share or want to offer support of the workshops continuing into the new year, please let your Intergroup rep know or come to the meeting yourself.
ALL OA MEMBERS are WELCOME to any and all Intergroup meetings!

Q: How can I navigate the holidays and stay abstinent?
A: Check out this
list of tips submitted by an OA member who adapted the list from a 12-step friend.
12 TIPS FOR ABSTINENT HOLIDAYS
Is this time of year the "Bermuda triangle" of recovery? The theory is that Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas (or Chanukah) can be rough sailing for recovery - you might come out abstinent, but not everyone does. But everyone CAN emerge from the holidays with their recovery intact, by living one day at a time and working the tools and steps of our program.
Here are twelve tips that have helped me and many others survive and thrive in this time of year that seems to have more focus on food than other months:
1. Line up extra OA activities (meetings, phone calls, service, intergroup).
2. Entertain OA friends, especially newcomers, at home or at a coffee shop.
3. Keep your OA telephone list with you at all times.
4. Find out about holiday meetings or celebrations in local groups.
5. Skip any parties/eating occasions you're nervous about.
6. If there's one you can't skip, take an OA friend - or keep literature and a gratitude list handy - or text someone before and after the event.
7. Don't think you have to stay late (plan an "important date" in advance).
8. Go to special places that are meaningful to you... church, a park, the shore. And don't forget about extra meetings!
9. Don't sit around worrying or brooding; catch up on reading, OA tools, museums, walks, letters.
10. Don't project about holiday temptations; remember "One day at a time."
11. Even if you cannot give material gifts, you can share the gift of your recovery and enjoy the beauty of the holidays.
12. Carry the message. Give joy away, and it will be yours to keep.
