“Knocking Down Barriers” Panel Discussion Celebrates Women Leaders at NYMC
An incredible group of women leaders took part in the “Knocking Down Barriers: Women in Healthcare and Academic Leadership” panel discussion at NYMC on March 23, where leaders from both NYMC and WMCHealth shared their experiences as women in medicine, academia and leadership roles. The event featured three panels and 14 panelists who touched upon both personal and professional obstacles that each faced and shared lessons and advice from their own experiences. Stand with Ukraine Humanitarian Drive is Successful with More Than 2,500 Donations
The NYMC community rallied to support the Stand with Ukraine humanitarian drive to aid people in Ukraine who are facing a humanitarian crisis from the Russian military invasion of their country. The collection saw more than 2,500 donations of food items, clothes and other products flood into donation bins around campus, and even inspired members of the Westchester County government to join the cause. NYMC and TU Host 18th COVID-19 Symposium
Moderated by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of NYMC and provost for biomedical affairs of Touro University (TU), the 18th COVID-19 Symposium on March 22, addressed the latest topics on COVID-19 from the news headlines. Expert panelists addressed COVID-19 found in white-tailed deer and what it means for humans; a fourth dose of vaccine; headaches as a symptom and as a long-term effect of prior infection; vaccination of children under five years of age; pandemics as the impetus for anti-Semitism; the rise in opiate-related deaths during the pandemic; and a legal perspective on mask mandates in public schools. The Office of Development and Alumni Relations Fosters Relationships with Students Past and Present
From fostering relationships between the vast NYMC constituency to coordinating alumni events, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations plays an important role in keeping the NYMC community connected. Bess J. Chazhur, M.S., chief development officer and executive director of alumni relations, oversees the various initiatives that bring together alumni while securing financial support for present students. Ms. Chazhur provided an inside look at how the Office operates.

Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, FAcEM, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, was an invited panelist for a special webinar, “Racial Equity in Community Recovery: Integrating Public Health and Emergency Management,” hosted by John Jay College for Criminal Justice on March 16.

In recognition of Women’s History Month in March: NYMC has a connection to Rosie the Riveter, the iconic star of th
e campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for defense industries during World War II. Rose Bonavita, who worked as a riveter in 1943 in the General Motors Eastern Aircraft Division in Tarrytown, New York, was one of the inspirations for the famous image. She later became Rose Hickey, mother of SOM alum Joseph Hickey, M.D. ’77, and served on the NYMC Parents’ Council during his four years as a medical student.
