ELDER OF THE MONTH - Dick Lura

SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

PARABLES

Last week, we continued in the lectionary readings that describe this long story of a complicated family. They family that began with Abraham and Sarah laughing at God is ultimately going to lead us to the pit where Joseph is placed by his brothers. While they did not kill him there and then, they did sell him off to foreign people as a slave. For many, this is the end of their legacy, but thankfully not for Joseph. He finds favor, he interprets dreams, and he becomes a steward not for control but for the preservation of life. So we come to the family reunion. Is it all fun and games, is it filled with more betrayal? One thing that we know for sure is that it gets more complicated.

Yours in Christ

Brandon

GREEN SPACE NEWS

Millions of wild salmon return to the waters of Alaska's Bristol Bay every summer. For the Yup'ik, Dena'ina, and Alutiiq people, whose ancestral ties to these lands and waters span millennia, the tradition of gathering to harvest wild salmon is a cherished inheritance. Yet for the last two decades, a proposal to build what might have been the largest open-pit mine in North America threatened that traditional way of life and jeopardized the headwaters of Bristol Bay. At stake were some of the last wild salmon runs on Earth, along with a thriving commercial fishing industry worth $2.2 billion a year, an intact ecosystem of lakes and streams, and diverse wildlife.

For more than ten years The Nature Conservancy conducted scientific research to help support local efforts to halt the mine proposal. Finally in January, in response to a 2010 petition from Bristol Bay Indigenous groups, a federal scientific review, and a public process that included 31,000 TNC supporters, the Environmental Protection Agency vetoed the mine by exercising Clean Water Act protections. The EPA action is one milestone in ongoing Indigenous-led efforts to create lasting change in Bristol Bay.

VIRTUAL CREATION ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

LAKE CLARK NATIONAL PARK & PRESERVE, ALASKA

Locations Unknown ( August 2022 | 10:00 min.)

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is a land of stunning beauty. Volcanoes steam, salmon run, bears forage, and craggy mountains reflect in shimmering turquoise lakes. Here, too, local people and culture still depend on the land and water. Venture into the park to become part of the wilderness.

Lake Clark preserves the ancestral homelands of the Dena'ina people, an intact ecosystem at the headwaters of the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world, and a rich cultural wilderness.

Comprised of 4 million acres on the Alaska Peninsula in southwest Alaska, Lake Clark is one of the nation's most remote national park units. Established by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) on December 2, 1980, the park and preserve support an ongoing tradition of subsistence culture in a volcanic and partly glaciated landscape containing habitat for wilderness dependent species of fish and wildlife.

This Green and Growing Land: Environmental Activism in American History

By Kevin C. Armitage

(333/ARM)

From Benjamin Franklin’s campaign to combat pollution at the Philadelphia’s docks in the 1750s to the movement against climate change today, American environmentalists have sought to protect the natural world and promote a healthy human society. In This Green and Growing Land, historian Kevin Armitage shows how the story of American environmentalism—part philosophy, part social movement--is in no small way a story of America itself, of the way citizens have self-organized, have thought of their communities and their government, and have used their power to protect and enrich the land.

Armitage skillfully analyzes the economic and social forces begetting environmental change and emphasizes the responses of a variety of ordinary Americans—as well as a few well-known leaders—to these complex issues. This concise and engaging survey of more than 250 years of activism tells the story of a magnificent American achievement—and the ongoing problems that environmentalism faces.
