UFTI Graduate Dever Joe Awarded the Neville Parker Award from the Council of Universities Transportation Centers (CUTC)
The Neville Parker Award is awarded to two non-thesis master’s students reports in the field of policy and planning. This year Joe Dever, a graduate from the MURP program at UF, won the award for his research paper exploring Miami’s Metrorail system titled “Embracing Capital Investment: An Analysis of Development Oriented towards Miami's Metrorail”
This research was supported by Dr. Abhinav Alakshendra (Department of Urban and Regional Planning), Dr. Ruth Steiner, (UFTI), and Mr. Aaron DeMayo (Future Vision Studios).
This report helps better understand the historic context of that transportation project and how the city embraced that capital investment to develop neighborhoods or install other networks (like sidewalks and bike lanes) that would enhance the Metrorail. "The lessons I have learned in doing this research paper are essential for any city, transit agency or property developer involved in a large, multi-modal project," Dever said.

How UFTI Used Location Analytics to Gain Insight into Wildfire Evacuation Behaviors
Researchers from the UFTI used location analytics from Gravy Analytics to better understand how people behave during wildfires. These insights can help inform the emergency response to wildfires or other natural disasters.
The UF research team comprised of Dr. Xilei Zhao, Dr. Erica Kuligowski, Dr. Daniel Nilsson, Dr. Lovreglio Ruggiero, and Dr. Yiming Xu. The researchers published the first GPS dataset for wildire evacuation in a paper titled "A Highway Vehicle Routing Dataset During the 2019 Kincade Fire Evacuation".

UFTI partners with CALSTART and Morgan State University on the Federal Transit Authority’s Research-to-Practice Initiative
UFTI researcher Dr. Jacob Yan and T2 Center Director Dr. Nithin Agarwal are part of an effort funded by the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) to identify the best ways to promote innovation in transit services by tapping the most promising results of FTA research. This Research-to-Practice (R2P) initiative, led by CALSTART (a California-based nonprofit), will promote innovation by effectively communicating FTA’s most promising research findings across the transit industry as well as develop strategies to put successful results into use.
This project brings together researchers from CALSTART, UFTI, and Morgan State University. In addition, NVIDIA will support UFTI in testing novel applications of Natural Language AI to achieve FTA objectives.
