St. Boniface Saved!

It was one of the founding issues of Preservation Chicago and, at the last minute, the former St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church was saved as a part of a redevelopment that will include an adaptive re-use of the building together with a new residential building a facility for the Chicago Academy of Music.

With mere hours left before a demolition permit would be released for the shuttered church,  Developer Mike Skoulsky of Stas Development closed on the property Friday Sept. 23. This happy outcome was the result of tireless advocacy for the Henry Schlacks-designed church at Noble and Chestnut from the neighbors, Preservation Chicago and hard work on the part of the staff at the city of Chicago.

Read more about the future for the building at DNAinfo here, Our Urban Times here and the Chicago Tribune here.

Shrine of Christ the King Raises $1.46 Million

Great news from Woodlawn's Shrine of Christ the King - the Institute of Christ the King has raised  $1.46 million out of the $2.9 million needed for the new roof and windows to be completed following the damage from the devastating fire that occurred just under one year ago.

They are also hosting a rally on October 8, 2016, at noon, on the anniversary of the Shrine's fire last year and also the anniversary of the Chicago Fire of 1871. It's a free event and all are welcome to attend the celebration.

Preservation Chicago is pleased to see this effort move forward so successfully, especially because our advocacy played a role in transferring the building to the Institute, thus saving it from demolition.

More information available at the Shrine's website here.
