Celebrating Freedom!

Juneteenth - What It Means to Me

Juneteenth is a celebration of life to me. Juneteenth is just another opportunity for me to share our history with my children and grandchildren. This is also another opportunity that I can share our history, our struggle and our successes with my co-workers. I take pride in wearing the colors of Freedom and explaining to my co-workers what they signify. Our freedom, the lives lost, our beautiful melanin colors that comes in all shades and our strength, fertility and ability to stand as one!

-Dannielle Allen

I grew up in Houston’s 3rd Ward where the church was the center of our community. Ministers there were more than spiritual leaders, they were mentors who modeled civic engagement. Reverend Al Edwards was a leader whose legacy of connection resonates through my career. In 1979, State Representative Al Edwards authored and sponsored House Bill 1016, making June 19 ("Juneteenth") a state paid holiday in Texas. In 2021, President Biden signed Senate Bill 475, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making Juneteenth a legal public holiday. Today, our community engagement efforts across AT&T’s South Texas organizations are possible because of Rep. Edwards’ work. Our support of Missouri City’s 21st Juneteenth Celebration promotes internet access, adoption and the digital skills that prepare underserved communities for meaningful employment. As a member of The NETwork BICP’s Houston Chapter, I’m honored to empower our members and our community today.

-Charles Stein
