Mission Moment

Getting Seniors Across the Finish Line

By Dr. Garett Smith

Superintendent

We asked staff in all of our schools to pick an educational problem of practice to solve this year.

The SHS team, led by Bill Terry and Tammy Lightner, decided to focus on 22 seniors who were in grave danger of not graduating at the mid-point of the school year.

Team members decided which adult might be the best mentor for each of the students, and then immediately got to work counseling and encouraging them and facilitating communication with their classroom teachers.

I’m proud to say that of the 22 students we started with, 15 graduated in May and three more signed up for summer school.

Our target in SCS is always 100 percent of the students, 100 percent of the time. We don’t intend to give up until we get there.

"It was the last second for me. I started passing my last class on the very last day work was able to be turned in. It feels pretty good to finish." ο»Ώβ€” Chavieon Strother

Chavieon had stopped showing up to school, so his school mentors intervened to help him get back to class and on course. Their care for his well-being and academic success won him over. Chavieon is now preparing to enlist in the Army.
