Children's Books We Love about Food Allergies

These books help to instill confidence in food-allergic children as well as to help them talk to their friends who don’t live with this condition. We also value this selection of books as great resources to share with teachers, childcare providers and other caregivers to help educate all children about food allergies. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago have been at the forefront of research, care and advocacy to improve these childhood and adult allergic diseases for years. Now, Northwestern has established the new Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research, which will provide both investigators and patients more support while uncovering new discoveries from applied and basic science research.

On the CFAAR website, there is a video library of helpful informational videos pertaining to food allergies and asthma. Some videos include: Teens Talk Food Allergies, The Asthma Story, START PSA.
Allergy Education Videos:
The Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research (CFAAR) offers a friendly way to start the food allergy conversation with family and friends at home or at school. The goal of these videos is to address the food allergy needs of the Early Childhood Population. These videos were created for parents, caregivers, children (under the age of 6) and early childhood professionals.
Join CFAAR's Community Advisory Board!
In collaboration with Ann & Robert H. Additionally, there are pdfs for Food Allergy Workbook and Passport, which help children become better aware of their allergies.
The Food Allergy Experience
Written by Dr. Ruchi Gupta and Denise Bunning, The Food Allergy Experience provides a reliable source of information and advice in simple, easy-to-read terms. For those contending with food allergies, the book offers guidance and invaluable perspective. For friends, relatives, health care providers, teachers, and caregivers, the book will instill a better understanding of how food allergies impact life at home, at school, and in the community, helping them to more effectively assist children with food allergies.
Research Project: College & Food Allergies

Do you know a college-aged student? We need your help!

The CFAAR research team is working on a project to learn more about the needs of college students with food allergies nationwide. We are looking for college students (with or without food allergies) and recent college graduates to complete an anonymous survey that will only take about 5-15 minutes to complete.
This survey will help researchers help identify areas which need improvement on college campuses so they can better support students with food allergy.

Research Study for Children with Moderate to Severe Asthma
The Division of Allergy and Immunology is participating a key nationwide study which is funded by the NIH / NHLBI called PRECISE. This study seeks to apply precision (personalized) medicine to subjects with severe asthma to determine which treatments may be most beneficial for different subtypes of asthma. We have had some difficulty with recruitment during the pandemic, but feel that this study would be of potential benefit to your moderate to severe asthmatic subjects.

The PRECISE study is different from other asthma studies in a number of ways:
  • Characterizes patients by immune responses, airway inflammation, lung function and more to determine which intervention would work best for them.
  • Subjects will be randomized a treatment which is predicted to be beneficial to them; and may have the option to progress to other potentially beneficial interventions.
  • Lasts 18 months or less.
We are looking for children with asthma who are:
  • Ages 12-17 years
  • Have been diagnosed with moderate to severe asthma requiring at least medium to high dose inhaled steroid and one other controller
  • And may have had an exacerbation in the last year
Palforzia® Oral Immunotherapy Services
The Allergy-Immunology Division is now offering Palforzia® oral immunotherapy for children ages 4-17 who have peanut allergy. We are doing oral immunotherapy in our new oral food challenge unit at the Lurie Children’s main hospital. If you are interested in a consultation for Palforzia® treatment, please call our office at 312-227-6010.
Does your child have a peanut allergy?
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is currently enrolling volunteers for an Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) clinical trial for peanut allergy studying the use of AR101; a medication which contains peanut allergen in the form of peanut flour that may help the body naturally lessen the severity of its reaction to peanuts. If your child is 1 to 3 years old and has a peanut allergy, they may be eligible.

For more information email us at AllergyResearch@luriechildrens.org or call us at (312) 227-6474
Does your Toddler Wheeze?
Your child may be eligible to participate in a research study at Lurie Children’s Hospital to see if the medication Xolair® can prevent wheezing children from developing asthma as they grow older. If your Child is 2 or 3 years old and has had 2-4 wheezing episodes in the past year, they may be eligible. For more information email us at AllergyResearch@luriechildrens.org or call us at

Food allergies and mental health: It’s a family thing. Too often short shrift is given to how food allergies affects a child’s – and a family’s – mental health. Seeking therapy can help ease the anxiety and find a healthy balance that works for everyone in the family. Often times, therapists don’t understand food allergy. And parents are tired of educating
therapists about what it all means, including OIT treatment. As a family therapist, I help families navigate food allergies wherever they are in the journey. I’m thrilled to be working with children, adults, parents or the whole family on how to make food allergies more manageable.

Researchers Need Your Help: Please Consider these Surveys
Survey on New Type of Auto-Injector (SanFran Academy of Art):
Academy of Art University in San Francisco Student, Andrew Schlecht is encouraging parents to fill out a survey to gather information to help create a new type of auto-injector. He says, “
I want to design medical products that make people's lives better. While doing some early research I identified a gap between the ages where children are ready to play without such strict adult supervision, and the age where a child learns to and is comfortable administering their own Epipen if the parent wasn't around to do so. I am working on a project where the ultimate goal is to close that gap, and design a product that makes the parent and the child both comfortable in the event of an emergency.”

Survey on New Type of Auto-Injector
A team of undergraduate Bioengineering students at the University of California-Riverside is confidentially interviewing individuals with severe allergies, as well as close family members of such individuals, in order to gain insight into opinions surrounding commercial autoinjectors and their suitability in treating anaphylactic reactions. Through participation in a research survey course hosted by the National Science Foundation, they are interested in learning more about the unique challenges that allergy-prone individuals face with the intent of educating their community and informing future treatment options. Interviews take place via Zoom and last approximately ten minutes, catering to participant availability. Those interested in participating in this study can complete this interview contact form. Questions about this study may be addressed to Jordan Rolsma at jrolsma@engr.ucr.edu.

The groove for online school has been set so this semester is much more smooth. Walks have been my saving grace when I've been in the house too long. What I've Been Enjoying:
I just finished up the book "The Crack Up" by F. Scott Fitzgerald and while it's not the most uplifting collection of essays, there are great insights nonetheless. I recently just watched the movie "When Harry Met Sally" and it's one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I'm always happy to give movie recommendations.
