Happy New Year!

We are so excited for all that we are going to accomplish and do as a chapter in 2022.

Although times are rough around the world, let's continue to spread the love and joy of music. Let's continue to inspire excellence and nurture lifelong involvement in choral music for everyone through education, performance, composition, and advocacy.

For those who are attending ACDA East, please make sure that you note the NEW COVID-19 GUIDELINES. ACDA, as a national organization, is taking the necessary precautions and implementing the appropriate mitigation strategies to keep all our members, students, and attendees safe.

I am happy to announce that we are upgrading our website. We are getting a new platform and a new design. We will let you know when the site goes live. In the meantime, please email us at mddcchapteracda@gmail.com with your questions and inquires.

We have a lot planned, so make sure that you mark your calendar for our upcoming events! We hope to see you at our in-person and virtual events.

Sincerely,

Rachel Carlson,

Confident Music Selection: A Focus on the Forgotten Layers
Friday, February 4, 2021; 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
A Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion webinar and workshop facilitated by the Maryland/DC ACDA Diversity Chairs
Margaret Clark
Artistic Director
C. Paul Heins
Associate Conductor/Genout Director
What is your reaction when you encounter:
  • a spiritual written in dialect?
  • a song from the African continent with no information about where it came from?
  • lyrics that describe an experience that no one in your choir has ever lived through?

Do the situations above paralyze you?  Creating a concert program of multiple pieces is already a daunting task for the choral director, requiring careful consideration and masterful pairing of tempi, modality, genre, vocal skill, and audience appeal. Ensuring a diverse, equitable, and inclusive program is another, challenging layer of our work.  Selecting and performing repertoire that accurately reflects the source and appropriately honors the creators can be overwhelming... to the point of getting stuck. This workshop will offer guidelines to get "un-stuck." Attendees will (hopefully!) leave with greater confidence in selecting and presenting repertoire that is culturally responsive, comprehensive, and entertaining. Please bring your “problematic pieces” and questions for a round-table discussion that will conclude the event.
