Students Celebrate International SEL Day
On Friday, March 10, 2023 students and staff at NES & NPS will celebrate International SEL Day. This year's theme is 'Finding Common Ground, Pursuing Common Good.' The goal of SEL Day is to give people around the world the opportunity to showcase the SEL skills they use to build relationships and support their communities.
Students & staff at NES and NPS will participate in SEL activities using a digital choice board. They include team building games, SEL read alouds and videos, writing/discussion prompts, mindful check-ins, a virtual calming room and MORE!
Social emotional learning (SEL) changes lives. Studies show that SEL delivers long-term improvements in skills, behavior, and academic performance while reducing anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. SEL competencies are also critically important for long-term success in today’s economy. Sharing a common goal to raise awareness of the importance of Social & Emotional Learning will help our school families connect, learn and grow.

World Language NES Service Project
The Narragansett High School World Languages Honors Society (WLHS) organized a service project with the Narragansett Elementary School on January 27th, 2023.
Providing all necessary materials, the WLHS chose to teach four 3rd grade classes of about 15 students each on how to make a God’s Eye or, in Spanish, Ojo de Dios.
The God’s Eye has been used in many ancient Hispanic cultures as a symbol of welcoming, blessing, and protection.
The 3rd graders had a great time making their God’s Eyes while learning a little bit about the culture and history behind them!

The Importance of Voting: Secretary of State Visits NHS
Last month, R.I. Secretary of State Gregg Amore visited our high school civics class and spoke on the importance of voting and civic engagement at a young age.
School and state officials, including State Representative Teresa Tanzi, were also in attendance. Students then practiced casting a ballot using official voting machines. Those who were already at the age to have had the chance to recently vote shared their 'first vote' story for an upcoming video being created by our students in Digital Media Production!
These pieces to government are crucial and give young Rhode Islanders a say at the policy-making table!

NHS Peer to Peer Attends Youth Health Panel
On Wednesday, February 8th, five members of the NHS Peer to Peer group attended a community forum for Washington County called, "Youth Mental Health Briefing", hosted by the Washington County Coalition for Children.
Superintendent Dr. Peter Cummings, was one of the participants that served on this panel including Peer to Peer member, Jen Bergeson.
Mark and Beth Collins were also there representing the Chris Collins Foundation, which sponsors the Peer to Peer program in area schools. The goals of the program are to educate peers about mental health, de-stigmatize mental health issues, and encourage help seeking.
In addition to their ongoing campaigns, Peer to Peer students are also planning a Mental Health Awareness Week (March 20-24) with dress up days like Spirit Week, that bring attention to Mental Health and de-stigmatization. They are still working with the administration to hold some fun activities such as games and speakers that might help raise awareness in an enjoyable way, while not distracting too much from academics. Follow them on Instagram for all updates HERE!
