SANCTIFY – SANCTIFIED – LESSON 6
THE BELIEVER’S SANCTIFICATION – PART 2
As we look at how this subject applies to the New Testament believer, we see the related Greek words from the root word “hagi…”
Hagiazō: This is an action verb meaning “to separate” or “to set apart.” It is the act or process of being sanctified.
Hagiasmos: This is “separation” or “a setting apart.” It is the completed action or result of hagiazō or having been set aside.
Hagios: Translated “saint,” it applies to the believer who has been “set aside” or “sanctified” unto God by Holy Spirit through Jesus. It is the individual believer, the “saint.”
I see the sanctification of the born-again believer as two-fold. The moment one is truly saved, born again through faith on Jesus and His redemptive work, they immediately stand in the position of sanctification by the work of the Holy Spirit in them. II Thessalonians 2:13 says, “…God hath…chosen you to salvation through sanctification (hagiasmos) of the (Holy) Spirit…”
The Holy Spirit has completed the work of setting apart your spirit unto the Lord. Your human spirit is once and for all reconciled with the Holy Spirit. This gives you a standing position of sanctification that you will not lose. I would call it “positional sanctification.” This has made your spirit, which is the real “you,” holy in the sight of God. I Peter 1:2 also affirms it, saying to the “Elect…of God the Father, through sanctification of the spirit…and the sprinkling (covering) of the blood of Jesus Christ.”
We are spirit beings. We have a body and a soul. Our spirit, the real us, stands in the position of having been sanctified unto God when we are born again. We have been set apart and made holy unto the Father. If that is the case, then why do we struggle to “live holy?” We shall tackle that aspect of sanctification tomorrow as we discuss the progressive aspect of sanctifying our body and soul unto the “perfect man.”
