Ujamaa Collective Event Highlights

Contributions of Black Women in History

Ujamaa.jpg

There were many activities at the senior center in February celebrating Black History month. FACE was blessed to have talent from the Ujamaa Collective hold a special class for our seniors.

The Ujamaa Collective’s practices and products focus on connecting Americans to Africana cultures. The term “Ujamaa” itself has its origins in the African country of Tanzania. The term, established in the 1960s, refers to a system of village cooperatives working together to economically sustain the community.

LaKeisha Wolf, Executive Director of the Ujamaa Collective, conducted a class for Macedonia FACE’s Active for Life Senior Center at the Thelma Lovette YMCA. She showed participants how to paint small portraits of Black ancestors in glass frames. LaKeisha told the group that she “wanted to highlight Black women changemakers throughout history that may not be as well known”.

Seniors read descriptions of each of the women’s accomplishments and were then able to pick one of the Black women to paint.

In her role as Administrative Assistant, Tanika's is

the friendly voice you hear when you call Macedonia FACE.

We sat down with Tanika to learn about her and to hear about her work with Macedonia FACE.

How did you come to be employed at FACE?

I was always curious about FACE, but never applied. I was asked by an agency about an open position, I agreed, and they presented me. After interviews with members of the staff to ensure I was a good fit for the organization, I was asked to join the team.

Where did you learn the skills needed to do your job?

I’d started working in the office in high school and over the years I have had various on the job trainings, business analyst, executive assistant, etc. among other trainings in various markets. My operations/administrative background allows me to experience so many aspects of the business at FACE

Why do you work at FACE rather than anywhere else?

FACE is very unique. There’s a sense of pride in the work we put in daily. We are truly a team and are held accountable.

What do you see as your best skills / contributions to the organization?

I’m a true people person and have the ability to adjust quickly when necessary. Those are qualities necessary within the org. no matter what dept.

Tell us about your life outside of work. Tell us about your family, hobbies, and interests.

I love spending time with my family and close friends. I love to write poetry- anything in the arts is good for me. I also love to travel.

How is Macedonia FACE’s mission a match for you?

I’m a passionate person who enjoys engaging with the community and helping others while doing so, FACE conveys the culture that allows me to do just that.

FACE staff attend State College Health Fair

to address important health issues

Health Fair Image.PNG

On March 16, Case Manager, Amy Wender, and Program Assistant, Candra Jones, attended a health fair at the Penn State of Greater Allegheny campus. With a prime location near the campus cafeteria, staff had the opportunity to talk to many students about the risks of HIV/AIDS, to answer questions they have about COVID-19 vaccination, and to encourage positive health behaviors. Students received raffle tickets to win prizes by answering health related quiz questions.

Candra described an interaction with one student who asked for suggestions regarding how to combat misinformation about health issues on social media.

The fair included service providers addressing a variety of topics including mental health treatment, physical healthcare, and safety.

Community outreach and engagement activities like this one are an important part of the work done at Macedonia FACE to encourage a healthy and thriving community.
