War in the Mind investigates the staggering rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicide amongst soldiers and veterans of the military; some estimates suggest that up to 15% of soldiers may suffer from PTSD. In the film, director/producer Judy Jackson gains unique access to a joint University of British Columbia / Royal Canadian Legion counseling program which helps soldiers undo the wiring that military training has implanted in their brains, confront their pain, and transition to productive civilian life.

Like Any Other Kid observes the intimate relationships between incarcerated youth and skilled staff at three unique facilities across the country. These facilities utilize the Missouri approach to juvenile justice, where non-punitive, therapeutic programs are used instead of punishment to change behaviors developed in response to childhood trauma guide and teach youth how to take responsibility for themselves and successfully re-enter their communities. The ultimate goal is to teach these young adults how to take responsibility for themselves and successfully re-enter their communities.

Wounded by the stigma of being in "special ed" the five teenage protagonists of Original Minds struggle to articulate how their brains work. Parents, teachers, friends, therapists, and coaches all weigh in—sometimes with conflicting views—but it's the kids themselves who become the experts in this film, as they work intensively with the filmmaker to tell their stories and discover that they are smarter than they thought. Their narratives eschew the confusing thicket of labels for learning disorders, instead revealing universal truths about how we all acquire and process information.
