Six horses who went through the breaking process on South Carolina farms and training centers entered the winner’s circle following stakes races between October 24 and November 17.

On October 24, the 2-year-old gelding Brooklyn Strong had only two beat early on in the Sleepy Hollow S. at Belmont Park. Three wide, only a length back after ¾’s of a mile, Brooklyn Strong made the lead at the 1/16th pole and drove home a 2 ¼ length winner. Brooklyn Strong prepared for his racing career at Travis Durr’s Webb Carroll Training Center.

Another 2-year-old, Hungarian Princess, is a 3 time winner in 5 career starts. She captured the Indiana Stallion Fillies S. at Indiana Grand on October 29. Hungarian Princess broke sharply and sat on the flank of the leader early on. She took command at the top of the stretch and came home a 4 ¾ length winner. This filly came up through “Goree” Smith’s program at the Elloree Training Center.

Another Webb Carroll Training Center graduate, Dreaming of Drew, broke on top and never looked back in the Princess Elizabeth S. at Woodbine on October 31. In front by 1 ½ lengths after the opening ½ mile, she extended her lead to 3 ¾ lengths at the wire.

Two more of Durr’s former students won stakes on November 14. No Cents, fifth early on, came four wide into the stretch and when the leaders reached the 1/8th pole, he shifted into a higher gear and hit the wire 1 ¼ lengths in front. An hour later up in Canada, Jilli Marie proved best in the South Ocean S. at Woodbine. Jilli Marie broke awkwardly stumbling and then quickly moved up into a contending position. In an eventful trip, she came between horses exhibiting her desire to win and she did by 1 ½ lengths.

Russian Influence has now won 2 of her 3 career starts. In the Miss Indiana S. at Indiana Grand on November 17, she trailed the field for the opening ½ mile. She began passing horses one by one and in a determined effort, got up to win rather easily by 2 ¾ lengths. She learned her early lessons under the watchful eye of Donna Freyer in Camden and is owned Stuart Grant’s The Elkstone Group, LLC.
Steeplechase of Charleston Takes Place on
November 15
The 2020 National Steeplechase Association came to a close on November 15 as the final meet , Steeplechase of Charleston was held in Hollywood S.C. Five races were held. Four were contested going 2 ¼ miles over National Fences and the feature, The Alston Cup, traveled 2 1/8 miles over National Fences.

Jockey Gerard Galligan was the star of the day. He rode four winners and nailed down the leading jockey title for the 2020 season. Jonathan Sheppard trains all four and was the leading trainer for this year. Sheppard is the owner as well as trainer of two of Galligan’s mounts, Penitence and Bet the PotHigh Sierra, owned by KMSN Stables and Buttonwood Farms LLC’s Zoom Zoom Zoe were winners saddled by Sheppard.

Mr. Sarinana was first over the finish line in The Alston Cup. He is owned and trained by Kate Dalton and was ridden by her husband, Bernie.

We hope and pray we can look forward to a “normal” 2021 steeplechase season kicking off in Aiken, SC next March.
SCTOBA Annual Meeting Postponed
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused numerous cancellations of events since the middle of March. Due to the fact the number of “positives” is not diminishing, the SCTOBA Annual Awards Banquet will be postponed until we are comfortable inviting a guest speaker and being able to enjoy the evening in person.

I do want to emphasize that our intention is to postpone this event, not cancel it! Thank you very much for understanding and you will be kept posted.
Legislative Update
A subcommittee of SCTOBA members was put together earlier this year to explore how ADW (Advance Deposit Wagering) can be introduced into South Carolina. The first step is to show our legislatures how important the equine industry is to our state job-related and economically. ADW can be a source of revenue that can help enable bonus money for South Carolina owners and breeders. This will make it more appealing to help enhance the breeding industry in South Carolina.

A bill has been introduced to form a committee consisting of legislatures and horse people to study the impact of the equine industry. Progress was starting to be made before Covid-19 reared its ugly head. The state legislature goes back in session on January 12. We will keep you posted.
Two-Year Old Winners Abound
Many 2-year-olds had the start of their racing careers delayed by the pandemic this year. Between October 20 and November 20, a significant number who received their foundations in South Carolina had their pictures taken.

Four from the Elloree Training Center were winners – Ultimate Badger (Churchill Downs), Malloy (Churchill Downs), Natty Beau (Laurel Park) and Hungarian Princess who won the Indiana Fillies Stallion S. at Indiana Grand.

Randy and Kala Rentz also saw four reach the winner’s circle – Docsluckycat (Mahoning Valley), Excitable Lady (PARX), Catti La Belle (PARX) and Memory Banquet (Penn National).

Donna Freyer and her crew at Custom Care Equine watched Russian Influence win the Miss Indiana S. at Indiana Grand and Full Dinner Jacket get his picture taken at Laurel Park.

Other breaking programs that had 2-year-old winners include Travis Durr’s Webb Carroll Training Center’s Lucky Sitka (Belmont), Cary Frommer’s Doubleoseven (Laurel Park), McCutchen Training Center’s Funny Bone (Indiana Grand) and Kip Elser’s Kirkwood Stables developed Wicked Finn (Presque Isle).
