Council Connect - December 2021
Hello!
Here we are at the end of a year most of us would like to move on from AND at the beginning of a year most of us are feeling unsure about. Every Equity member has and will continue to face challenges, but as we do, we can’t forget about some of the bright spots, accomplishments, and organizing efforts that are part of this time:

Pablo Rodríguez, the new Minister of Canadian Heritage, is already in talks with Equity, listening as we advocate for emergency support for those Members still feeling the impact of the pandemic (along with other important issues). An excellent response to the Council Focus Survey has helped inform our mandate looking ahead at the next three years…we are in new industry times, and are grateful for the new ideas.
The simplest thing we can all do is wear our masks and get our vaccines and boosters; check out https://www.fastertogether.ca/ and let’s hope the new year will bring better days.
Speaking of Council, a new Council has been elected and will begin their work in January. Congrats to everyone who ran, and of course, thank you to the outgoing Council for their hard work during some of difficult days. To the new Councillors, I look forward to working with you!
Another big change coming in the new year will be the revised membership section of the Bylaws taking effect, and Equity is proud to have created a joining process for intimacy directors and expanded the joining process for directors.
I'd also like to thank everyone who was able to pay your basic dues. We understand that for many artists that isn't easy given the lack of work opportunities the last two years. If this is still a challenge (and it’s totally ok if this is this the case for you), there are options and I encourage getting in touch with Equity to discuss them.
Lastly, some news recently went out about the change to the insurance plan. Although it does seem like yet another bitter pill after two challenging years, it remains an interim plan and it means we know we can access insurance coverage in 2022. Very shortly, Equity will begin the process of consulting with you, the membership, and negotiating with appropriate providers to secure an affordable, enduring benefits plan for 2023 and beyond. The aim, as it is for so many other parts of the industry, is to build back better. For more information on the 2022 insurance plan, check here.

On behalf of Council, I wish members a holiday and new year that contains something to look forward to. May 2022 find us healthy, rested, and standing by to get back to work.

As ever, my inbox is always open at vicepresident2@caea.com.
Yours in Equity,
2nd Vice President and Ontario Councillor
