Lookin' for Love? Several years ago I befriended a stray cat in my driveway. My cat, Puss, let me know he wasn't interested in sharing his accommodations, so I mentioned him to a friend, who said her mother's cat had passed away and she might be ready to consider a new one. Long story short -- she took him in and they fell in love. Now she has passed away rather unexpectedly, and Kino needs a new, one-cat home. My friend and her husband have been taking care of him in his own house, right next door to theirs, but he's living alone and needs a new, loving home. A few months earlier and I happily would have taken him in but with Arts Blast assistant Petra firmly in residence here, that's not possible. If you can think of someone, maybe a senior citizen, who could love Kino, a very nice boy, and benefit from his presence, please let me know. Thanks. Oh, his estimated age is 8-10 years.

It's All About Art This Weekend - ArtsFest in Stuart
It's an exciting time for the Arts Foundation (and Council) of Martin County. ArtsFest 2021 is about to begin in Stuart.

The Arts Council's Executive Director, Nancy Turrell, will mark 22 years in that position come April Fool's Day but has been involved as a volunteer and patron for many more, she said. "Some of my favorite jewelry and art has been purchased at ArtsFest."
The 2020 ArtsFest squeaked through last February, just under the Covid wire, unlike Vero Beach Art Club’s Under the Oaks, forced to disband at the end of the first day, when shut downs began. ArtsFest will look a little different this year, Turrell said. Pre-Covid, Memorial Park and East Ocean Boulevard would be filled with artists and arts activities.
“Last year for, example, we had the ArtsFest Off the Wall Competition going on Saturday, Corning Museum of Glass performed demos every hour, 2 stages with music and dance performances, Florida Aerial Arts & Dance performed on their silks, food trucks, and VIP tent,” Turrell said. Community groups participated with hands on activities for kids to enjoy. The Atlantic Classical Orchestra created a musical petting zoo and the Treasure Coast Guitar Society gave mini-guitar lessons. “The CHOPPED competition had bleachers filled with onlookers while 5 chefs created a dish with secret ingredients live, with a preliminary round on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Plein Air artists painted on Sunday morning with judging later in the day."
Realizing that fewer artists would be traveling and applying this year, Turrell said, “We made the foot print a bit smaller. Each booth is spaced 10’ from the next booth allowing for ample separation and social distancing. We will have a single stage and have markings in the grass to remind people to stay with their group. We are encouraging attendees to bring something to sit on to enjoy the entertainment, especially A Midsummer’s Night Dream at 3 p.m. on Saturday, which will be a full performance of Shakespeare’s play by A.C.T. Studio Theatre.” Activities for kids and the high school art clubs’ booths will be absent this year, but the Court House Cultural Center has been incorporated into the ArtsFest campus, Turrell said, so everyone will be able to see the Clyde Butcher “America’s Everglades” exhibit as part of ArtsFest.
Those who choose to to stay at home a while longer won’t have to miss ArtsFest, thanks to an innovative option, ArtsFest at Home. Some of the participating artists will have their work on display and for sale online and community partners will have pages that show how they enhance the arts community. Viewers will get to participate in the CHOPPED event online, Turrell said. “ArtsFest at Home is the CHOPPED venue and already has 4 videos from local chefs who are in the competition for the award this year. Voting is taking place online and people are encouraged to order the shrimp appetizer at each of the 4 restaurants and then rate it online. The CHOPPED results will be determined by people’s choice.”
There will be an abundance of live music and performances all weekend, promising to “highlight and celebrate the spirit of world culture—dazzling displays of dance, music, and drama all on one stage at the Gazebo.” Everyone is encouraged to bring a chair or sit-upon to enjoy the entertainment — socially distanced.

ArtsFest 2021 Artists Chris Kling & Lisa Young
Chris Kling is running circles around some of us (me, for one) these days. She's exhibiting monthly with the Martin Artisans Guild at The Palm Room in Sewall's Point, gearing up for the March 6-7 Martin County Open Studio Tour, getting ready for the Lighthouse Plein Air Festival in Tequesta March 14 - 20, and will be showing and selling her art at ArtsFest 2021 in Stuart this weekend. Visitors to her booth there, No.225, will see “a series of several large wave oil paintings and some smaller paintings that have been done en Plein Air, on location. Lots of Floridian scenes and paintings of Stuart.”
This will be her 6th year in ArtsFest, where she was featured artist in 2017. Her oil paintings have been in exhibitions around the state, Maryland, and Texas since the Covid shutdowns began, and in Kling Gallery, Wine & Decor and Palm City Art & Frame locally.

Kling likes national shows but is partial to regional shows and festivals, "I like to do shows in Florida, especially, so I can easily travel to them. Plus, my work is influenced by where I live. And it is just fun and inspiring to exhibit with some of the best artists in the country and feel the push to keep reaching for my highest potential."

Now an empty nester, Kling has a dream come true that many artists would envy, a really big studio space! “Since our children are grown I was able to use the whole second floor as a studio! It has a bonus room, an office, a bathroom to clean my brushes, storage area, and a balcony to take work outside sometimes!”
Stuart mixed media artist Lisa P. Young said she has exhibited in her hometown art show, ArtsFest, in 12 of the past 14 years. This year will be a little different, however, for Young and the other artists entered in the show this weekend in downtown Stuart. “I have restaged my booth to facilitate a more open format as well as separate sections according to subject matter, allows for good air flow as well as social distance spacing. In addition I’ll be masking up, I have a mega bottle of sanitizer, and sales can be handled touch free.” Young feels confident in the Covid precautions adopted by the Arts Council of Martin County.
Young said she can get a little carried away with texture and color in her acrylics, making unique use of paint skins. At ArtsFest she’ll be showing “my whimsical flamingos, brilliantly colored flowers, along with my 3-D undersea reef paintings.”

With most of her sales happening at art shows, Young is happy to be able to hit the road again, albeit with caution. “My hubs and I love doing the shows. We get to see some great towns; it keeps us physically and mentally challenged. People buy my art and we make a living late in life doing what we love. As soon as some municipalities started allowing for limited size art shows, I applied and started participating.” The artist said she feels safer in outdoor art shows than in any other venue, and “so far the patrons have been so happy to get out to see the art and artists again. … It has been so good getting back to business.” Her work can also be seen at Profile Gallery in Jupiter.
Tickets are now on sale for Program No. 2 from Ballet Vero Beach, Composer's Notebook: The Music of Antonio Vivaldi. In person and streaming options are available, beginning at $10.
We have a new giveaway! If you haven't met Florida author Tim Dorsey and his zany band of characters yet, this is your chance to jump in. Serge and Coleman are at it again in Tropic of Stupid.
To win a copy of Tim Dorsey's latest, Tropic of Stupid, pick any three-digit number and email it to willi@willimiller.com. Be sure to type Tim Dorsey in the subject line. One entry per person. The winner will be the closest on either side of the randomly drawn number.
It's Music Con Brio at First Pres
An award-winning quartet will make beautiful music in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church Sunday, February 21, at 4 p.m.

The musicians of Con Brio — Valentin Mansurov (violin), Marina Lenau (violin), David Pedraza (viola), and Aziz Sapaev (cello) — currently perform with the Palm Beach Symphony, Symphony of the Americas, Florida Grand Opera, Atlantic Classical Orchestra, and the Palm Beach Pops.

From Russia, Ukraine, Mexico, and Uzbekistan respectively, they have performed around the world as soloists and orchestral musicians with prestigious ensembles — Orquesta Sinfonica de la UAT in Mexico, National Symphony of Ukraine, Symphony of the Americas Summerfest Orchestra, and others.

The Sunday concert will feature a Beethoven String Quartet as well as the Elgar Piano Quintet, featuring Dr. Jacob Craig, Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian, on piano.

First Pres, while limiting in-person performances during Covid, has mastered live streaming technology, allowing musicians and concertgoers to stay at a safe distance while enjoying concerts.
The concert is at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard in Vero Beach. Admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested. Masks and social distancing will be required and attendance in the sanctuary will be limited to the first 100 guests. The concert will also be available online via Livestream on the church website: FirstPresVero.org.
And Brevard Symphony Orchestra Plays Heroic Beethoven
Leave it to Christopher Confessore and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra to know how to stretch even a year-long birthday celebration. Ludwig von Beethoven's cake would have buckled under the 250 candles needed last year but Covid all but canceled the entire, world-wide event before it even got a chance to begin. Back to the drawing board for celebrants.

Included in the BSO's 2021 season are several programs devoted to celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. The reimagined 2021 season began on January 23 with the first concert in its Signature Six Series, “Beethoven Celebration.” The Signature Six Series includes five classical programs and one pops program, Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The Matinee Series, three of the six programs, is also offered on Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. Confessore will lead the orchestra in all performances. Performances are at the King Center in Melbourne, with limited seating and CDC guidelines in place.

The February 20 program, Heroic Beethoven, will have one performance only, at 7:30 p.m. The BSO will perform Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” and will be joined by pianist Scott Watkins in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Patrons should contact the King Center Box Office directly to purchase tickets - 321-242-2219.

Each program will premiere on the BSO’s YouTube channel one week after the King Center performances. Virtual tickets to the streams are available for a contribution of $10 or more. Stream tickets are available by phone, 321-345-5052, or at Brevardsymphony.com/Streams.
Indian River Symphonic Association and Brevard Symphony Orchestra Together

The Indian River Symphonic Association had to cancel its 2021 season, thanks to Covid, but The Brevard Symphony Orchestra, a fixture on IRSA's program since the very beginning, is back in action. The annual BSO/IRSA concert for 5th graders, traditionally for students only, has been part of IRSA's community outreach since 1999. In a normal season, the students would gather to listen to the music and informative talk by BSO's Maestro Chris Confessore in person. This year, the organizations decided to take it to YouTube for everyone, not only fifth grade students, to enjoy. Confessore and the musicians are clearly having fun while sharing the famliar music and a world premiere composition by Soon Hee Newbold. It's free for all.
Lake Wales Arts Festival on for This Weekend
From the Lake Wales Arts Council:

The Lake Wales Arts Council is excited to present our 50th anniversary Lake Wales Arts Festival. Many of our new amenities from last year will be making a return, including an exclusive VIP village and live jazz by the lake. On Saturday night, February 20th we will host a free 50 year celebration.

The 50th Annual Lake Wales Arts Festival has a 49-year-old tradition of celebrating and exhibiting quality works of art by fine artists and artisans with more than 50 participants competing for more than $22,000! Presented by the Lake Wales Arts Council, the diversity of the critically acclaimed two-day Festival attracts thousands of art lovers each year who purchase original, one-of-a-kind works of art.

This year our Art-B-Que celebration will be free of charge on Saturday, February 20th from 6 to 9 pm on the shores of Lake Wailes. We will present our Arts Festival award winners at 7 pm during the celebration and will feature live music. Food will be available for purchase from Blue Dog Craft Barbecue and beverages from Grove Roots Brewing Company. (Food and beverages are included with the purchase of VIP Access Passes.)

We have been hard at work developing a strategy to hold our beloved fine arts festival while following all CDC, local, state, and federal health guidelines. This is an outdoor event with socially-distanced art walk and hospitality areas, hand sanitization stations throughout the entire festival, and masks are required for all vendors, staff, and volunteers. We hope that you will help us in our efforts to keep the arts safe and accessible during this global health crisis by wearing a mask and maintaining social distance which we know is vital to the health and safety of our entire community. Thank you for being our partner in health and in fine arts.

Hours of the festival are Saturday - 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday - 10 AM - 4 PM.
