2021 LENTEN WORSHIP SERIES

This moment in our collective lives has been jarring in so many ways. Even though our time of pandemic isolation may seem like quiet -- the cultural, political, economic and often familial landscape we have endured is anything but.

During Lent, we enter a liturgical season of truly quiet reflection and renewal. Our Lenten Worship Series is based on a song by Mark A. Miller and Lindy Thompson, In the Stillness. Each of the worship themes is inspired by a line of the song. We'll explore ways to encounter God in order to heal and renew our spirits.

FOR YOUR LENTEN REFLECTION

During the weeks of our Lenten Journey, the Worship and Program Committee has asked me to reprise the Musical Reflections that were our 2020 Good Friday Meditation based on the SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST.
The artwork and reflections I chose will be found here. A link in each post will take you to a musical meditation on YouTube.

These meditations were the result of an exciting collaboration. I was introduced to the Vanderbilt Divinity Library where the images are housed through my membership in the Worship Design Studio hosted by Dr. Marcia McFee.

Thanks to Katherine Hughes, violinist and friend of Trinity, for curating these musical performances that so powerfully portray these themes.
To Robert Arendt, whom I have not met, but you will hear his work in mastering these performances so the volume levels and quality are maximized for your listening.

And finally to Jon Meacham, historian and author of The Hope of Glory, from which many of these reflections are derived.

Take your time.

Linger in the artwork.

Ponder the reflections.

Savor the performances.

Surface your own questions.

Anticipate some insight.

Listen for the still, small voice of God.

AUTHORED REFLECTION The point of Good Friday, however, is that we are invited into a mode of life that offers us a new way of seeing both the temporal and the transcendent. The story of Jesus is a guide and a gate; it urges us to do unto each other as we would have others do unto us, and in so doing we are drawn ever closer to the cross-the emblem of unselfish love. We are free to decline the invitation, of course, and many do. But the invitation is still there, forever open. "Come and see," Jesus said to those who would become his disciples at the beginning of his ministry. Come and see: Why not come and see? Why not, to borrow another image from the New Testament, take the advice that the Epistle to the Philippians offers here: "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

One Great Hour of Sharing Special offering - Sunday, March 14th

Access to clean fresh water is vital for all of humanity, but for women in particular, water access means the difference between life and death for them and their families. With your support, 100 families will benefit from the Water Well project, sponsored by the United Church of Christ in Mozambique.  When you give to One Great Hour of Sharing, you invest in the hopeful future of women and girls around the world and serve as co-workers with God to build a just world for all.

The OGHS special offering envelope will be enclosed in the bulletin mailing for March 14th.

Mission Core

Aha! I see you peeking up over that snowbank! Looking for something to do, some way to make a difference in someone else's life?

Our Love of Neighbor mission team asks you to that on your next trip to Mariano's, Heinen's or Costco, you put an extra package of paper towels, paper plates, napkins or a few packages of recyclable flatware in your cart.

Please earmark that extra package for the "Drive & Drop" collection event that will happen from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, March 21, 2021 in the parking lot of Trinity United Church of Christ - even if it is snowing.

All you will need to do is put that package of paper goods in your car, drive to church, open your car window and hand your package to one of the collectors and be on your way.

Our donated paper goods will be delivered to the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry Monday morning, March 22nd.

Please keep in mind that while the media has shifted their focus on vaccine, descending positivity rates, and other news, the reality is that there remains record unemployment (with loss of all benefits, mainly health insurance) and a lot of empty kitchen cupboards.

As we move into March, signs of spring will follow soon afterward. With those signs of new life, our Love of Creation team will be rolling out their plans and ideas for furthering the environmental renewal of our campus. The goal is to be the 'green example' for our community - and beyond, and to create results that we will be share in story form all across the United Church of Christ in the monthly national newsletter.

Our Love of Children team patiently awaits the lifting of the restrictions of the pandemic to re-engage in live teaching, as well as developing some sort of outreach project for them.

Oh! By the way, don't expect to see that 1947 International Harvester pickup truck in the parking lot. That's just an image that I got from the internet to help tell our story.

Governor Pritzker Announces COVID-19 Vaccination Website

Coronavirus.Illinois.Gov Will Host Vaccination Locations, Vaccination Appointment Information, FAQs, & Updates on Vaccination Plan

CHICAGO - Building on the state's progress as it moves into the early stages of Phase 1B of the COVID-19 Vaccination Administration Plan, Governor JB Pritzker announced a new portal on coronavirus.illinois.gov to provide residents with easily accessible information about the COVID-19 vaccine. Coronavirus.illinois.gov will provide eligible residents with nearby vaccination sites, information on how to make an appointment to receive the vaccine, updates on the state's plan and eligibility, and answers to frequently asked questions about the COVID-19 vaccine.

"Today, as we launch the newest phase of our Vaccine Administration Plan for frontline essential workers and those 65 and over, I'm proud to announce our statewide vaccination site locator, searchable by zip code and city, at
coronavirus.illinois.gov," said Governor JB Pritzker. "This site will serve as a hub of all vaccine-related information, directing residents to the appointment booking homepages of our 97 local health departments and our pharmacy partners, which will total hundreds of locations statewide. That also includes information on our first Illinois National Guard mass vaccination site, opening tomorrow at Tinley Park Convention Center, and will be updated as more state-run sites and hundreds of additional local options come online. As federal supply is currently limited and every state in the nation is facing a shortage, I urge all eligible Illinoisans to check back regularly for available appointments - and in the meantime, mask up, keep our distance, wash our hands, and remember we'll stay healthy and safe if we look out for each other."

Beginning today, Walgreens is providing vaccines at 92 sites across the state, eligible residents can schedule an appointment at
Jewel-Osco will begin vaccinating eligible residents tomorrow and the link to schedule an appointment is now live and can be found at https://www.mhealthappointments.com/covidappt

Over the next few days, additional pharmacy partners will be coming online and opening registration for appointments. Taken together, these pharmacy partners will provide hundreds of sites in every region of the state.

Over 3.2 million Illinoisans are eligible for Phase 1B. Eligible residents will be able to receive a vaccine at one of the Illinois National Guard (ILNG) assisted sites, at a site operated by a local health department, or at a partner pharmacy.

At this time, these sites will be available by appointment only. As the federal supply of vaccines increases and Illinois receives more vaccine, the state will launch walk-in locations and expand sites to additional providers like doctor's offices and urgent care clinics. More information about those locations will be released in the coming weeks.
