Interview With Our Shelter Cook
|
|
COVID-19 has changed the way we do things, including here at Yellow Brick House. Earlier this year, Yellow Brick House completed a series of renovations to modify our emergency shelters, to protect clients, staff and volunteers from the unnecessary risk of contracting COVID-19 or a future pandemic illness. These upgrades were made possible thanks to The Resilient Communities Fund grant awarded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) and the Federal Community Support Fund.
Part of these changes and the way we operate, included hiring a full time cook to prepare meals for our clients, to ensure physical distancing, and increased sanitization in order to protect our clients and staff.

We are excited to introduce our Shelter Cook, Angelina to our community and are delighted to have her on our team! We asked her a series of questions to learn more about the work she does, and the incredible impact it’s had on the lives of the women and children in our shelters.

What is your cooking philosophy?
I am passionate about using fresh ingredients, to prepare nutritious meals for our clients. I know that a healthy diet can have a profound effect on your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. It is especially important for children in their growth and development stages. That’s why I prepare wholesome, and nutritious choices – I always ensure there are lots of fresh vegetables, a good source of protein, complex carbs and healthy fats.
|
|
What are your favourite meals to cook?
We have clients from a variety of different cultural backgrounds. I love to try out new recipes from different cultures and introduce clients to new foods. I love seeing the women and kids enjoy my food, and I love how food can bring people together. The kids really enjoy my pasta, mashed potatoes, and stir fry’s, so I like making that as well!
|
|
What does your typical week look like?
During the week, I evaluate the current needs of our clients, including dietary restrictions and preferences. I ensure to accommodate all diets, including gluten free, lactose free, halal/kosher, etc. I then prepare a meal plan for the week, and put together a grocery list. On the weekends is usually when I do my grocery shopping. During the week I make a variety of nutritious meals for lunch and dinner. There are always snacks available, and al la carte items, such as bagels & cream cheese, oatmeal, cereal, tuna salad, cold cuts, and fresh fruit. During the week I also put together to-go lunches and snacks for the kids to take to school.

What are the most helpful donations?
I really appreciate grocery gift cards – this allows me to purchase fresh produce, eggs, meat and items that don’t store well. Pantry staples like tomato paste, par-boiled rice, legumes, barley, beans, olive oil and spices are also really helpful! For the holiday season, I’d also love to bake some homemade treats, so items like flour, baking powder, vanilla, canned fruit and yeast would be great!

|
What is your favourite part about working here?
I love being able to cook for the women and children here. Not having to worry about making their meals, allows them to focus on the most important thing which is rebuilding their lives. It’s rewarding being able to help them in this small way, and provide some comfort, and good food! I also love sharing my recipes with clients – I love that food brings people together!

As the Holiday season approaches, we know many people are eager to find ways to give back to their community and spread joy. This year, we’ve launched our Power To Choose Holiday Campaign. The idea of this campaign is to encourage the gift of choice through symbolic giving such as gift cards, transitional packages, and services.
The gift of choice empowers women to purchase what they need, when they need it, sometimes for the first time in their lives.
Unfortunately, financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases. Your gift gives women the financial freedom, hope, skills, and resources that empowers them to rebuild their lives.

We are accepting drop offs at our administration office and are located at 52 West Beaver Creek Rd, Unit 4. We have extended our hours for the holiday season.
We are encouraging folks to confirm their appointment in advance to ensure social distancing. Before dropping off your donation, please fill out the donation form below, and email it to [email protected] with an approximate date/time you plan on dropping by.
