"You have it easily in your power to increase
the sum total of this world's happiness. How?
By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone. . .
Perhaps you will forget tomorrow,
the kind words you say today,
but the recipient will cherish them over a lifetime." Dale Carnegie

Dear Southern Door Community,
It is that time of year when we are in for the long haul before a break. Sometimes, one can get a bit of "cabin fever" with the cold weather, icy roads, short days, and impending winter storms. It also means that when we are all in such close company indoors with family and friends, that our daily actions with each other to be positive, extend gratitude, and be more understanding of those in our surroundings are so important.

Research shows that it takes 4-5 positives to balance out 1 negative. You may want to consider your interactions with the important people in your lives - your children, your family members, your co-workers, and others that are part of your life. Would they say that you are providing them with enough positives and appreciation?

If we could all take just a few extra minutes to thank others, show some kindness, or express our appreciation for what they do for us, just think how our families, our schools, our places of work, and our community would benefit!

Yours in Education,
Patti

CONGRATS TO SDHS SENIOR, HANS GOLWITZER
Door County Youth Apprenticeship's Student of the Month. Hans works at Hatco!
Describe your apprenticeship:
I work in three different departments (inventory stores, shipping, and service parts) I basically just float around to wherever I am needed the most. I walk around the plant picking up packages for shipping and delivering them to the designated area. In service parts, I generally pick orders or I bag up parts to send them out. Lastly, in inventory stores, I pick parts around the warehouse and send them up to the factory, I put parts away, I pick orders for departments in the factory and I deliver them around the plant.
What have you learned while apprenticing at Hatco:
I have learned how to work within multiple departments and how different processes work throughout those departments. I also have been training on the forklift and other machines.
What are you enjoying most about your apprenticeship?
I like being able to contribute to my teams and I enjoy being around the people I work with.
What are your plans after graduation?
Go to NWTC for electrical power distribution

Southern Door High School to Offer
AP Capstone Diploma Program
Diploma Program Focuses on College-Level Research, Collaboration, and Presentation Skills Crucial for College and Career Success
Southern Door High School is one of approximately 1,800 schools worldwide to implement the AP Capstone Diploma program―an innovative program that allows students to develop the skills that matter most for college success, such as research, collaboration, and communication. The program consists of two courses taken in sequence: AP® Seminar and AP Research.

The Southern Door Board of Education gave approval on December 15, 2020 for Southern Door to offer the AP Seminar in the fall of 2021. Superintendent Patti Vickman says: “This innovative program provides opportunities for a broader, more diverse student population ready for college and beyond. The program gives our teachers more leeway with curriculum choices, so their students can access more challenging coursework and sharpen their reading and writing skills. In surveying our students at Southern Door, there was interest by some of our students to be further challenged with a college-level research program.”
THE FACES OF COVID:
EDUCATION DURING COVID-19
