Adelphi University's College of Nursing and Public Health Newsletter
Spring 2022

Message From the Dean
Walking around our vibrant and beautiful campus this spring, I find it truly wonderful to see our College of Nursing and Public Health students and faculty engaged and excited about being together in person once again.

Throughout the pandemic, even when classes were remote and the campus was quiet, our Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL) in the Nexus Building never stopped. In fact, it was busier than ever, with faculty and lab staff providing nursing students with vital hands-on experience. We have learned so much about the importance of innovation, flexibility and the value of connection to others, even while in remote settings. Our CNPH Nurses Week theme this year—“Reset Your Wellness: Learning to Embrace Self-Care”—reflects the resilience of nurses as we emphasize the critical importance of wellness for all healthcare professionals.
In this edition of our newsletter, we offer a glimpse into student learning in our state-of-the-art sim labs, and gain insight into the ongoing realities of the pandemic from the perspective of our faculty public health epidemiologist. We explore the lasting historical impact of racism on healthcare and our profession. And we highlight several generous gifts that will have a lasting impact on the lives of our students.

Despite the difficulties of the past two pandemic years, our healthcare programs are growing and thriving. The Master of Public Health program has recently undergone an accreditation review, and our healthcare informatics program is entering the candidacy phase for its accreditation. We celebrate the accomplishments of our doctoral nursing students: Seven PhD graduates and one Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduate will proudly attend their upcoming Doctoral Hooding ceremony on May 22.

And on May 12, 287 new nursing graduates will gather in the Center for Recreation and Sports with faculty, family and friends to be presented with their nursing pins, a symbol of both the nursing profession and their Adelphi education. We commend all our students for their accomplishments and wish them well as they enter their chosen profession.

Cordially,

Maryann Forbes, PhD ’99

During two presentations to the Adelphi community, K.C. Rondello, MD, CNPH clinical associate professor and University epidemiologist, emphasized the importance of COVID-19 vaccines and cautioned that variants will keep the coronavirus in our lives for the foreseeable future, albeit to a lesser degree.

Alum Mildred (Loughlin) Kahane ’49’s $1M Bequest for Nursing

Thanks to a $1 million gift to Adelphi from trailblazing nurse alumna Mildred (Loughlin) Kahane ’49, three CNPH nursing scholarships will be established. Kahane was a first-generation scholarship recipient herself, who was inspired to “pay it forward.”

Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL)

The simulation lab is more important than ever when it comes to training healthcare workers. Students in our labs obtain vital hands-on clinical experience. Located in the Nexus Building, the 22-bed CESiL houses seven clinical exam rooms, a pediatric exam room, a delivery room and a home-care setting. Students perfect their training in a safe environment, with simulated situations ranging from routine to emergency, so they are prepared and confident for their first RN jobs.
