Issue Brief: School Discipline during COVID-19: Inclusive and Supportive Strategies for Schools as they Re-open
During the pandemic, schools are adapting to new policies and practices that include wearing masks, physical distancing, and virtual learning. Children vary in their ability to adjust to such changes. Best practice discipline strategies can help schools implement and enforce new rules and expectations in a way that protects against increased risk of exclusionary discipline such as suspensions, expulsions, and arrests.

This Issue Brief provides guidance to schools and districts for addressing school discipline across virtual, in-person, and hybrid settings in an inclusive and supportive manner to keep students physically and emotionally healthy during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
Study on Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Reveals High Satisfaction Among Caregivers
CHDI’s Brittany C.L. Lange, Ashley Loser, and Jason Lang co-authored an article, “Caregiver Satisfaction with their Child’s Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy published in Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy. The article analyzed caregiver satisfaction with their child’s participation in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), an evidence-based treatment program for children. Caregivers reported high satisfaction with TF-CBT. Findings suggest that caregiver satisfaction should be assessed during TF-CBT (and other treatments), with efforts made to proactively identify and address caregiver concerns.

A New Framework for a More Sustainable Oral Health System
A new paper from the DentaQuest Partnership for Oral Health Advancement outlines a Three Domain Framework for oral health that focuses on prevention. CHDI's Vice President for Health Initiatives, David Krol, MD joined oral heath leaders from across the nation in developing the framework. It calls for a primary care-like structure for oral health care delivery, facilitates value-based payment models and enables patients to invest in their own oral health. Learn more.
"A strong, sustainable health system is built on prevention, value and equity. The Three Domain Framework, with its primary care approach, patient-centered focus, and evidence-based foundation, provides the framework for increased alignment of the dental and medical communities in our shared quest for improved health outcomes for all."

Infographic: Children benefit from evidence-based treatments
Over the past decade, Connecticut has developed a strong foundation of evidence-based trauma-informed treatments (EBTs) for children and found that these EBTs are more effective and efficient than standard mental health treatment. EBTs are also associated with a reduction in treatment outcome disparities for children of color. CHDI, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, created an online infographic illustrating ways children are benefitting from EBTs in Connecticut. It includes information and links to data on treatment outcomes, where to find a provider, training opportunities, and policy recommendations.
