MONDAY MEMO
8th graders in Latin Club (Lydia, Jeremiah, Sam, and Camryn) had great success in their first Certamen event of the school year, finishing in 3rd place against high school students from around the United States.
Greetings!

Our skating program begins this week, and numerous clubs, both old and new, are going on after school. Please read through the information below carefully and reach out if you have any questions.

Happy Monday!

NOTES
CLUBS!
For those families with students joining clubs, please remember these three important things:
  1. You will not be charged for the EDP, because most clubs are free and separate from Sean, Lucia, and Zane's supervision and activities.
  2. Your child will not be given a snack from the EDP, so they should pack an extra snack and know to save it for after school.
  3. Pick up time is when the club ends, those participants cannot rejoin the EDP.
SOCCER JERSEYS
Anyone not participating in Thursday's 6-8 game (see below), please wash and return your jerseys to Sean ASAP.
SKATING
K-8th graders begin our ice skating program this week, which happens every Friday during November and December. We believe strongly in making use of this community resource to enhance our PE curriculum, to give students an opportunity to practice personal responsibility for their belongings and independence in gearing up, and to build a stronger student community. Unfortunately, because of our large study body size and the COVID protocols for indoor events, we can't go as a whole school. To preserve our goal of this being a mixed-age experience, we will take two house groups (Aqua (blue), Terra (green), Caelum (white/grey), and Ignis (red)) each week. If you don't know which house your child is in, please 1) ask them (younger students will remember the color better than the Latin element); 2) click on the green grade level buttons below for a specific list in each class. Families with siblings divided between houses, we have made changes so that they will skate together, and emailed those to you specifically.

This Friday, November 5, Caelum and Ignis houses will go skating. Those students should be picked up at the Fenton Chester Arena at 3:15. Students must have a second layer of pants, long sleeves, hat, and mittens or gloves. Helmets are encouraged.

Those students not skating (Terra and Aqua houses) will be participate in engaging, mixed-age movement activities on campus. K-5th graders can be picked up at 3:00 and 6-8th graders at 3:30.

The Extended Day Program is only open to those students who are on campus and do not go skating. We can't transport students back to campus and need to keep the groupings clear and simple. This follows with our policy that the EDP is never an option for students dismissed from our swim or ski programs off campus either.
RIVERSIDE APPAREL ORDERS
Apparel order forms are due back to Krystal by this Friday with payment by check.
RADA CATALOGUE FUNDRAISER
Parent Annie Patoine (1st grader Paul, 4th grader Lily, 6th grader Rosa, Lacey '20) has organized a catalogue sale with Rada Knives and Kitchen Tools. A percentage of each sale will be donated back to Riverside to help meet the parents' $25,000 fundraising goal (approximately $20,000 remaining since the yard sale). Items from this catalogue make great upgrades to your own kitchen inventory or wonderful gifts for others during the holiday season.

  • Catalogue sales are open until November 12, when forms should be returned to Krystal. If you place an order through the catalog, then the order will be shipped directly to the school.
  • Online orders are open until November 19. Share the link (https://radafundraising.com?rfsn=6152657.008dc66) with friends and family, and products can be shipped directly.

If you have any questions, you can email Annie Patoine.
PAG MEETING
The Parent Advisory Group will meet next Wednesday, November 10 at 5:00 pm. Dinner will be provided. If you have topics you'd like to add to the agenda please email PAG Co-Leader Kim Adams. All parents are welcome to attend this meeting.
THEATER CLUB
We've got a new club starting at Riverside School. It's for 3-5th graders who are interested in theater. We hope to cover several topics during the year including improvisation, puppets, and physical performance, to name only a few! Theater Club will meet on Thursdays from 3:15-4:15, beginning November 11th. Our first session will last 4-5 weeks and focus on improv games. We are limited to 12 students, to sign up, please email Anna Crytzer (4th grader Fiona). Huzzah!
CHESS CLUB
Riverside chess club is starting up! Beginning this Wednesday November 3rd, and every Wednesday after that, Mr. G and Nathan will be running a chess club for anyone of any age (in the past we have had homeschoolers and parents join us) who would like to learn the game or push what they know to the next level.
  • Our earliest elementary students will meet in Allee's room at 3:00 for a short lesson and then some time to play a few quick games. Our middle age group (3rd through 5th grade) will meet on the stage in the assembly hall. They will get a game in, then have a quick lesson, and then play again. Both these groups will wrap up between 3:30 and 3:45. We would love at least one parent to commit to being in the room, so Mr. G can bounce back and forth. If you want to help out that way, please email Mr. G. Parents should aim to pick up around 3:30 unless their kid is in Crazy 8s, which begins at that time.
  • Middle schoolers will begin their chess club at 3:45 after packing their bags. We will also meet in Allee's classroom. They will set up their boards, then have a chess lesson, then get ample time to play.  6-8 th grade Chess club wraps up at 4:45. If there are any parents who want to supply a healthy snack for the active brains, please let Mr. G know
Last year we sent three students to the state chess tournament. This year, we hope to send more!
MATH COUNTS CLUB
Math Counts Club, a competitive math team for 6-8th graders, will begin practices on Thursdays from 3:45-4:30 pm, starting Thursday, November 11th. The group will be led by Caroline and parent Kim Adams (5th grader Cora, 6th grader Gabe). Please email Caroline if you have questions or plan to join.
BOTTLE DRIVE UPDATE
The bottle drive continues, with a goal to collect 10,000 returnable bottles and cans. Proceeds will be used support the Lyndon Area Food Shelf. So far Riverside has collected and cashed in approximately 4,300 returnables, which is equal to about $213, with a total of $495 that includes cash donations. All returnables are accepted that have VT label on them. Individual returnables can be deposited in the “Bottle Drive Box” behind the house, bags may be left near the dumpsters. Please email Student Council VP Jeremiah Watson if you have questions.
TICK CHECKS
We are continuing to find ticks on students in this particularly warm fall, please be checking thoroughly at home.
MILK CRATES
Milk crates are proving to be a very helpful tool in organizing materials on the porch that need to go home to absent students. If you are picking up supplies for an absent student, please leave the crate behind. If you have any milk crates to share, please leave them on the porch outside Krystal's office.
LYNDON INSTITUTE OPEN HOUSE
Lyndon Institute will be hosting an in-person Open House for 8th grade families on Wednesday, November 3, from 5:00-7:30 pm. Throughout the evening, you will be able to explore academic, artistic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities. Faculty and current students will be available for tours and questions. The evening will commence with fall refreshments and giveaways.

NATURE CLUB
Nature club for K-8th graders will meet this Wednesday from 3:30-4:30. Students should remember to dress for any weather. We would love to have some older (4-8th grade) students join the club to help work with hand tools and improve our campus.
SOCCER
Middle School will have its final game against BMA on Thursday. We will play at BMA's field. Due to the shorter days, we will be playing at 3:30. The students playing in the game have permission from their elective leaders to leave school early that day. Students may be picked up after clean-up at 2:45. If they could shoot to be there by 3:15, that would be great. Please talk with your child to decide if they will be playing in the game or not and have them let Sean know. If your child will be carpooling with someone else please let Krystal know that
